Market commentary for one-week period ended September 30, 2016 Wheat Futures Kansas City and Chicago wheat futures declined last week while Minneapolis futures built on their previous week's advance. The relative strength in Minneapolis futures compared with Chicago and K.C. futures partly reflected demand for protein in a year of historically low hard winter wheat protein. Wheat futures remained range bound with ample U.S. supplies and record world wheat supplies standing in the way of a market rally. December wheat futures posted contract and multiyear lows on Aug. 31. Last week, Kansas City and Minneapolis December futures traded around midway between the recent highs set in mid-August and the Aug. 31 lows, while Chicago December traded barely above its low. In the wake of the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Small Grains 2016 Summary and Sept. 1 Grain Stocks reports, futures showed little inclination to break out of those ranges. The U.S.D.A. estimated the 2016 wheat crop at 2,310 million bus, down 11 million bus from the August estimate but up 12% from 2015. The hard red winter wheat and durum estimates were higher than expected but hard red spring wheat and soft red winter wheat estimates fell well below expectations. The U.S.D.A. estimated Sept. 1 wheat stocks at 2,527 million bus, higher than pre-report trade estimates averaging 2,398 million bus. Strong export demand tempered downward pressure on futures. The U.S.D.A. indicated net export sales of wheat during the week ended Sept. 22 totaled 570,800 tonnes, up 2% from the previous week and up 20% from the prior four-week average. U.S. hard red winter wheat has become competitive in a number of world markets. The U.S.D.A. indicated wheat exports during the week were 843,400 tonnes, a marketing year high, up 53% from the previous week and up 36% from the prior four-week average. The fall crop harvests, expected to be record large, were expanding, and winter wheat seeding was making good progress. The U.S.D.A. indicated winter wheat seeding was 30% completed by Sept. 25, which was on par with the average five-year progress for the date. The market was braced for a smaller area planted to winter wheat, but the U.S.D.A. survey on plantings won't be released until January 2017. FBN Millfeed Nearby prices mostly fell last week. Declines in the spot Southwest truck market reflected ample supplies and solid flour production in the region. Several April-June quotes were adjusted higher last week although little trading was noted that far forward. An anticipated increase in seasonal demand with the onset of fall was not yet in evidence. Some feed formulations were expected to be changed for October-December. Attractively priced competing ingredients, such as distillers' dried grains, feed wheat, corn and soy hulls, were expected to take demand from millfeed. "Distillers are pretty cheap," said a Southwest trader, noting that a drop in export demand meant domestic supplies were plentiful. In the Upper Midwest, nearby values declined for the week as creep feed demand was on the wane. Prices in the Central states also weakened. In the Northeast, robust flour grind made it difficult to sell supplies to end-users whose pipelines were already mostly full. Millfeed was $77 a ton in Kansas City and $79 in Minneapolis, on a rail basis, compared with corn at $108 a ton and sorghum at $99 a ton, both K.C. Corn gluten feed was steady at $125 a ton, distillers' dried grain was down $5 at $130 a ton, and dehydrated alfalfa was steady at $215 a ton, all K.C.
