Gold Coast Cup This was the view the rest of the field had of Outrigger Aus The 42km Gold Coast Cup, contested over 42km, was another resounding success, with over 40 canoes paddling out to the start line including teams from NZ, Singapore, Hong Kong, as well as all the strongest Aussie clubs. The scene was set for a great day's racing. This year, for the first time, a second day’s racing consisting of a long & short course OC1/2 event was also introduced in an effort to make sure the teams who had travelled great distances to compete got a full weekend’s racing. Organizers wishes were granted as we had a light S.E. wind & small following swell with picture perfect weather. The paddle out to the start line was more of a challenge for some than others; those with good surf skills & timing didn’t get their hair wet, but some crews chose to challenge the 3 foot shore break with spectacular results. Story & images by Harvie Allison Off the line & both the top seeded men’s and women’s crews immediately signalled no mercy to the rest of the field. The all conquering Outrigger Australia open men’s crew showing the power that has won them every race contested this season, went straight to the lead in the new Kamanu Composites OC6 and were not challenged for the rest of the race winning in a time of 2:44:14. Extending their huge lead at will, the Outrigger outfit finished a comfortable 8 minutes in front of second placed Mooloolaba who duelled the whole race with NZ’s Pineula beating them home by a good 2 minutes in the end. Outrigger was in cruise mode half way through the race as the wind & swell increased enough to give the field a magic slide to the finish line. Back in the pack, the women's race was a one-sided affair as Surfers Paradise open women smashed the field winning 24 pacific paddler august 2011 http://www.huki.com http://www.huki.com
