Spanish America
While the Luna colony was earliest, it
was short-lived. So the title of "oldest
continuously occupied European settlement
in the nation" goes to St. Augustine,
founded by the Spanish in 1565 on the
Atlantic side of North Florida. St. Augustine

Undiscovered Florida

was the capital of Spanish Florida for over
200 years and that influence can be seen
everywhere, especially in the Historic
District, home to centuries of architecture
and monuments.
Standing sentry over Matanzas Bay
since 1695, Castillo de San Marcos is the
oldest masonry fort in the U.S. and one
of only two fortifications in the world
built from a rare form of limestone called
coquina; the other is 14 miles away at Fort
Matanzas, which guarded the southern
river approach to St. Augustine.
Following the cobblestone streets of
America's "Oldest City," timelines converge
at such diverse sites as the St. Augustine
Lighthouse and Maritime Museum, the
Pirate & Treasure Museum, the Colonial
Quarter and the Fountain of Youth
Archaeological Park, a tribute to what

may have been, according to legend, the
restorative spring sought by Juan Ponce de
Leon when he landed nearby in 1513.
Another legacy from Spanish rule
was Fort Mose, a free black settlement
established in 1738 by then-governor
Manuel de Montiano. Now part of the
National Park Service and a premier site on
the Florida Black Heritage Trail, the fort was a
haven for escaped slaves, who converted to
Catholicism and served in the Spanish militia
in exchange for freedom.

With the transition to territory and statehood,
North Florida became part of the South,
joining the plantation system of farming and
seceding with the South during the Civil War.
