Society Reports
Emerging Professionals Committee
The Emerging Professionals Committee
was heavily involved in the organizing of the 35th Annual and 1st virtual
SPNHC Meeting, held June 8-12, 2020.
We are thankful for this opportunity and
look forward to continuing our involvement in upcoming meetings held by the
Society.
During this conference, we held two
important virtual events. The first one
was our annual committee meeting,
which had over 100 participants. We
used a Google Doc during the meeting
and recorded participants' interests and
willingness to get involved with our
committee.
Our second event held during the meeting was a social event
on the last day and time slot of the conference. We had close
to 100 participants and divided them into groups with different areas of interest. Wonderful conversations emerged within
these groups, so much so, that we had to let some groups
know it was time to go or they would have continued talking
for hours and hours! We are grateful to those who volunteered
to guide these group conversations.

with new members and a solid working
group to participate in our new quarterly
virtual committee meetings.
In July, the Legs & Regs working group
discussed, and later drafted, in conjunction with the SPNHC Collections and
the Biodiversity Crisis Committee, a
submission to the proposed indicators
for the post-2020 Global Biodiversity
Framework. It is the follow-up agreement of the 2011-2020 United Nations
Decade of Biodiversity. Our response is
to a call for peer review of documents
drafted by the CBD's Subsidiary Body
on Scientific, Technical and Technological Advice (SBSTTA 24). The comments, specifically relating to the monitoring framework for
the 2050 goals and the 2030 targets of the Post-2020 Global
Biodiversity Framework, were submitted to the CBD Secretariat by the SPNHC President. With our response we want to
highlight the contributions of taxonomy and collection-based
biodiversity research, which set the baselines to many of the
post-2020 metrics. The indicators are a perfect opportunity
to raise our profile and the relevancy of our contributions to
society. The full submission may be viewed here https://chm.

We are still seeking blog authors! If you would like to write a
blog post for "Cracking the Collections," please contact us at
spnhcepg@gmail.com.

Respectfully submitted,
Dirk Neumann and Stephanie Carson, Co-chairs

We are also seeking members of the committee who would
like to be more actively involved. Our plans for 2020 involve
expanding our membership, producing blog posts, and finding better ways to connect with our emerging professionals to
provide them with the support they need. If you are interested, please email us, or contact us through social media!
