(four positions), pediatric anesthesia (three positions),
and cardiovascular anesthesia (one position). In
addition, we offer a fellowship in chronic pain
management co-directed with Physical Medicine and
Rehabilitation. Resident interest in fellowship training
continues to grow, with many graduating residents
deciding to enter post-residency fellowship training.

This past year has been a rollercoaster of emotions,
policies, and workflow changes in response to the
COVID-19 pandemic. As a residency training program,
we have learned to deal with much uncertainty. As
a department, we could not be prouder of how our
residents and faculty have learned to work through
adversity and build success.

80 basic science manuscripts, 10 book chapters,
and 35 abstracts in a wide variety of academic and
research-oriented journals and textbooks.
One of our senior residents was able to participate
in the ASA-sponsored Resident Scholar Program
in Washington DC. Justin Calvert, CA-3, spent four
weeks working alongside the ASA Political Advocacy
Division as they were lobbying for sustainability in
Anesthesiology. He was able to learn about healthcare
policy along with providing a resident's perspective in
discussions with policy makers.
Taking control of patient management in all phases
of perioperative care sets patients up for a better
surgical course. The Department of Anesthesiology
at Loma Linda University Health has incorporated
point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) training into the
daily routine of preoperative evaluation, intraoperative
management, and postoperative care of patients. The
Perioperative Surgical Home (PSH) is a model that
our department is using to the benefit of patients,
our hospital, and residency training program. The
PSH model of care coordination incorporates daily
postoperative medical management into all treatment
plans. Patient, staff, and physician feedback regarding
this program has been well recieved. Hospital cost

The vision of the Department of Anesthesiology
at Loma Linda University Health is that consultant
anesthesiologists of the future must continue to
evolve their skills and incorporate innovative ideas into
their daily practice.
