services have been popular with European and Asia-based
operators and now are available in North America.
Bob Whetsell of FDS introduced the new services to attendees,
adding that the company thinks " the foundation of
our customers' safety
analysis programs
and maintenance
analysis programs are
based on a secure,
accurate readout " of
available recorders.
" There's a ripple effect
that goes forward if
you have bad data
coming from your
FDR & CVR maintenance readouts
recorder, especially your flight data recorder, and that affects
any analysis that you may be doing on a safety program or
maintenance trending, " he added.
Flight Data Systems' FDR readouts service includes
parameter correlation checks, incident reports, data quality
analysis, readout reports and readout traces. Its CVR readout
services include audio analysis, intelligibility check, CVR
replay evaluation report, recording quality check and data
storage checks. The company's Datalink Decoding service
includes ATC datalink messaging and onboard maintenance
system reports, datalink message observation check, and
OMS message observation checks.
The company said it delivers more than 3,500 readouts
per year for more than 300 customers worldwide. Turnaround
time is three days and expedited 24-hour aircraft on ground
services are available. Flight Data Systems also provides
repair and recertification services for FDRs and CVRs.

Flightcell
Flightcell is the brainchild of New Zealander John Wylie,
who developed the first cellphone-to-headset interface out
of frustration he could not use his phone while flying. Today,
the company has
more than 4,000
systems in service,
worldwide, supplying
mission-critical
cellular and satellite
communication, and

tems. New from the company for 2023 is the Flightcell SVS
(safety voice services), which uses the global Iridium satellite
network to provide reliable and uninterrupted air traffic system
voice communications that are not adversely affected by the
interference typical of HF radios.
The Flightcell SVS is designed for operators of smaller
commercial, military or private aircraft seeking alternative
solutions to legacy HF Radio. Philip Hutchings, Flightcell
account manager, characterized the new unit as a " satellite
phone on steroids. " It's TSO-approved and complies with the
FAA's Advisory Circular 20-150B, Airworthiness Approval of
Satellite Voice Equipment Supporting Air Traffic Service Communication.
The
Flightcell SVS, when integrated with the aircraft's audio
system, will give the user full duplex conversations with air
traffic control, plus the ability to change the call's priority. It has
a low power requirement - from 12 to 32v DC, drawing only
one amp at 28 volts - and comes with ICAO-listed telephone
numbers already programmed for air traffic services around
the world.
Hutchings summed up the company's newest product like
this: " The Flightcell SVS is a light and compact all-in-one satvoice
system, cost-effective hardware giving you high-quality
audio, with no interference or radio-fading, global coverage
over the Iridium network, make calls to parties other than air
traffic services, make calls to air traffic services, including
changing the priority of the call, and simple installation. "
