Bodil Voss PhD, Principal Research Engineer, has been working at Haldor Topsøe A/S for 25 years, primarily within the field
of new technologies on the borderline between R&D and engineering. She was heading the tar reforming development
project in 2014-2015 as project manager. In her long career, she has visited a wide spectrum of processes within syngasbased technologies. She received her Ph.D. in Heterogeneous Catalysis from the Technical University of Denmark partially
based on her work and thesis on 'Value added Chemicals from Biomass'.
Jørgen Madsen, General Manager & Senior Technical Advisor in Topsøe R&D, has worked at Haldor Topsøe A/S for 42
years; during 30 of these years, he was occupied with the activities of design, supervision, commissioning, and start-up of
all established company technologies, attaining a broad knowledge amongst other on syngas preparation and application.
For 11 years, he was head of the Engineering Division, leading more than 200 engineers in their design work. During the
recent years, he has primarily been working within the field of development and design of new technologies. He was in
charge of the tar reformer revamp at the Skive Fjernvarme. Jørgen Madsen holds a bachelor degree in chemical engineering
from the Technical University of Denmark.
John Bøgild Hansen MSc, Senior Advisor, has been employed by Haldor Topsøe A/S since 1975. In 1979, he joined the
Research & Development Division, where he was Department Manager from 1984. In 2000, he became advisor to the
chairman and founder, Dr. Haldor Topsøe; fulfilling this role, he assisted Dr. Haldor Topsøe in the initiation of the Haldor
Topsøe tar reforming activities in Skive in 2009, and he has continuously followed and supported the project since then.
He has presented more than 30 invited keynote lectures on synthetic fuel production, fuel cells, solid oxide electrolysis,
and fuels from biomass production. John Bøgild Hansen holds 24 patents and has made more than 60 publications. He
graduated with a M.Sc. in Chemical Engineering from the Technical University of Denmark in 1975.
Klas J. Andersson PhD, Principal Research Scientist, has been working at Haldor Topsøe A/S R&D for seven years, primarily
within the fields of higher hydrocarbon steam reforming and methanation technology (substitute natural gas (SNG)). In the
years 2012 and 2013, he headed the R&D tar reforming development as project manager, and actively supervised the tar
reformer operation on-site during the DOE-funded wood-to-gasoline project at Gas Technology Institute. Before joining
Haldor Topsøe he earned his Ph.D. in Chemical Physics from Stockholm University in 2007, worked as a two-year Post Doc
at Technical University of Denmark, and has published more than 30 papers in surface science and catalysis.

New TCGR Multi-Client Study
"Membranes in Separations: Commercial Advances in Reﬁnery,
Petrochemical/Chemical and Industrial Gases Applications"
More so than ever, the need to reduce energy usage and costs
in the production and puriﬁcation of gas and liquid streams in
reﬁning, petrochemical/chemical and industrial gases applications
is paramount. Whereas older technologies including distillation
and ab/adsorption are well-proven, they are expensive and
energy-intensive. As a result, numerous
and signiﬁcant advances have led to alternatives in applicationspeciﬁc membranes which are more technologically and
commercially viable. It is an opportune time for industry
participants to re-assess the progress, evaluate
opportunities and consider the competitive implications
on their operations and strategies going forward!
TCGR's study will address the development, implementation
and implications of membranes in separations with an emphasis
on the resulting product/process improvements affecting costs,
purity and functionality of the products. These include energy
efﬁciency gains, waste/by-product minimization, and product
performance improvement/differentiation. The study will compare
the developments to current industrial state-of-the-art alternatives
and provide insights regarding the competitive and strategic
implications on the developers/partners as well as end user
industries.
