FMEC MD AND FMEC PG T here have been many accomplishments in the eventful 70 year history of AFMC. Deans' support for the increase in the number of medical school graduates in the war years was one of the first important contributions of AFMC (then ACMC). Over the years other notable contributions include strong support for the development of a number of new medical schools in Canada in the 1960's, support for the development of the CIHR, which emerged from the old MRC, and a strong social accountability agenda in recent years. Reforming our system of accreditation with the LCME and our American colleagues has been a recent accomplishment. One of the most notable achievements in recent years has been the development and implementation of the FMEC MD and FMEC PG reports and recommendations. In 2007 the President and CEO of AFMC, Dr Busing, sat down with officials from Health Canada and began a discussion about the need to transform medical education and residency education, and make them more accountable to the public and the patients we serve. This was at a time when there was international recognition for the need to enhance medical education; Canada was at the vanguard of recognizing and responding to that need. After many discussions and ensuring all the Deans of our medical schools were on board, Dr Busing negotiated a funding envelope with Health Canada to launch FMEC MD. The leadership of the project was placed with a multi stakeholder steering committee that included academic organizations, professional organizations, learner organizations and governments. Three academics were asked to lead the project - Dr Jim Rourke, Dean at MUN, Dr Jay Rosenfield, Vice Dean Education at U of T, and Dr Busing. A strong project management team was assembled, and consultants were hired where needed to support key activities. From 2007 to 2010 an exhaustive project was conducted. The project leadership consulted widely, listened carefully, and ultimately produced 10 recommendations for change to the education of medical students in Canada. These recommendations can be found in the report: The Future of Medical Education in Canada - A Collective Vision for MD Education. The recommendations were endorsed as a collective vision by the 17 medical schools in Canada, a major accomplishment. Recommendations address the learning environment, elements of the curriculum, and there is an emphasis on social accountability.
