If you do nothing here, her teeth will probably last a lifetime. A bite guard
might help them to not wear more. May or may not be significant. Unless she
has other concerns, I would have none. Not sure I would even take photos
unless she expressed some. Then and only then we'd have a conversation
about her concerns.
Anything else to "motivate" is based on my concerns, wants and needs,
not hers. She doesn't need fi xing unless she wants fi xing. ■

for in getting this thread started. But my opening is

usually the same.
After brief introductions: "What are the questions that are most important for you to get answers to here today?"
And when they answer, I ask, "What else?" And when they answer I ask,
"What else?" I keep going with "what else" until they say, "That's it." Then I
have a sense of direction to kick things off. I have my own agenda with a new
patient-as do we all-but can't jump into that fi rst. ■

my exam. To simply say "ask them questions" doesn't
help the lurkers reading this thread who want to know the questions to ask.
I asked this question to this patient: "Hello, Helen, it is a pleasure to
meet you. What brings you into our office today?"
Her answer: "I heard you were a good dentist."
My question: "That's very nice to hear. Can I ask you who told you that?"
Her answer: "I don't know specifically. I just asked around and was told
you were good and you were nice."
My leadoff after reviewing medical history is usually, "Do you have any
questions or concerns regarding any of your teeth?"
Her answer: "No."
Where would you go from there? ■

I'd ask, "What are you looking for with a good dentist? What does that mean to you?" ■

I go to great lengths to avoid questions with "yes"

or "no" answers. It invariably brings things to a halt.

So instead of, "Do you have any questions or concerns?" I would phrase along the lines of, "Tell me please about concerns,
questions or worries you might have about your teeth and smile. What's on
your mind?" ■
