WHAT LIES AHEAD?
We live in a time of great uncertainty. Understatement, right? Between navigating
through an ongoing pandemic, dealing with supply chain issues, and figuring out labor
shortages, along with the usual unpredictable factors such as the weather, times are
tough right about now.
Now, more than ever, it is imperative to keep a clear head, plan ahead and welcome
a positive outlook - remember, your mood is contagious. With planning on the brain, I
asked readers if you are employing a New Year's resolution going into 2022. I'd like to
share some of your responses below:
" Increase quality over quantity! "
" Condense the business to a more manageable size by eliminating less profitable lines. "
" To communicate better with my team members. "
" Hold onto, or increase, sales gained the last two years. "
" Take a day off! "
" To be more environmentally sustainable. "
These are all great and feasible goals (especially the one about taking a day off!). And
I hope each of you find success in 2022 and beyond. How we weather this storm will
determine how we move forward for years to come.
MY NEW YEAR'S RESOLUTION
On a personal note, I have been setting some goals of my own. And one of those led
me to a new opportunity. After 15 years, I am saying farewell to GPN. My time here has
been an incredible learning experience, and I am so appreciative of the relationships I've
made over the years and everyone's willingness to teach a young writer with minimal
horticulture experience about the industry.
It is amazing how much you can learn when you simply roll up your sleeves and just
get your hands dirty. That was basically my strategy since day one here at GPN. So many
of you - growers, academics, breeders, etc. - helped me get out of my comfort zone.
And I can't thank you enough.
If you're wondering what my next adventure will be, don't worry, you'll find me. I'm not
going very far - which leads me to my New Year's resolution. This does not just apply
to 2022; this is more a resolution for the foreseeable future and maybe you can help me
achieve it.
My resolution is to never forget my time here at GPN and everything I've learned and
the friendships I've made over the last 15 years. As I sit here and write this, I am flooded
with memories - from my very first trip to the California Pack Trials in 2008 (when we
had maybe double the stops that we do now!) to touring a cuttings farm in Costa Rica to
dozens of grower visits from Washington to Florida and so much in between.
I want to remember it all. So please do me a favor. If and when you
bump into me, stop and say hi, share your experiences with me, tell me
what your new favorite crop is (or which one is causing you trouble),
share your success stories or a challenge you're dealing with.
This is not goodbye, this is see ya later!
