rian Beevers, owner of Simply Local in San
Diego, spent 12 years managing farmers'
markets throughout the city. His interaction
with local artisans uncovered a need for a venue that
allowed customers to have a special experience with the
artisans. Beevers began brainstorming with vendors and
launched Simply Local five years ago and now has five
staff members.
Beevers said Simply Local moved to the North Park
area because it is " known for an incredible local vibe. "
He also said North Park has a minimal number of chain
stores and is a very active place. " The people here are
generally purpose-driven and will go out of their way
to support local business. Simply Local has become an
important 'go-to' gift shop for this community and
beyond, " he said.
" My staff is incredible, " Beevers emphasized. " They
handle the day-to-day, which allows me to look toward
bigger picture ideas ... like possibly opening another
location. " Beevers still plays a crucial role in daily
operations. His philosophy is to utilize 100 percent local
vendors, within San Diego County. " We estimate that
approximately 90 percent of all our products are made
within 20 miles of the shop. We do allow some local
businesses that specialize in fair trade and other ecofriendly
or good cause items to display in our shop also, "
he said. The store is the busiest between Small Business
Saturday through mid-January, but consistently attracts
shoppers year-round.
Simply local provides a mixture of merchandise
including: apothecary, jewelry, clothing, candles, home
decor, fashion accessories, books, and more.
" It is absolutely the fact that the community finds what
we do as important. Keeping things local has and is a big
part of why I do this, and when the community embraces
that it doubles the excitement factor, " said Beevers.
