Best friend, bestie, BFF, bud, bosom
buddy, amiga, amigo, confidante, sidekick-whatever
you call them, these
platonic close relationships enrich life
with joy, laughter, warmth and support.
New friends, old friends-they are, as
the song says, both silver and gold.
The " gal " in Galentine's suggests that
the day highlights close relationships
among women, but men can toast their
bromances, too. So can cross-gender
relationships, despite the ending of
" When Harry Met Sally, " when Harry
and Sally (Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan)
declared their love for each other.
These cocktails celebrate the value of
rich, platonic relationships.
Friendship Sangria
As seen in " Waiting to Exhale " (1995). When
relationships with men fell apart, Savannah,
Bernadine, Robin and Gloria had each other
to lean on. The characters also enjoyed the
company of Scotch and soda, cognac, red
wine and bubbly. This sangria recipe uses
red wine and can be prepared for two or
easily scaled up for more friends or for a long
evening of sharing tears and laughter.
▷ 6 OZ. RED WINE
▷ 1½ OZ. COGNAC
▷ 1 OZ. ORANGE JUICE
▷ 1 OZ. LEMON JUICE
▷ ½ OZ. LIME JUICE
▷ LEMON-LIME SODA
▷ FRUITS SUCH AS STRAWBERRIES AND
BLUEBERRIES
Stir the wine,
cognac and juices
in a mixing glass.
Drop fruits into two
wine glasses and top
with the wine, cognac and juices.
Add lemon-lime soda and stir lightly.
Margarita
As seen in " 9 to 5 " (1980). When co-workers
Violet, Doralee and Judy (Lily Tomlin, Dolly
Parton and Jane Fonda) storm out of the
office and away from their " sexist, egotistical,
lying, hypocritical, bigot " of a boss, they head
directly to Charlie's Bar. Over drinks, including
Violet's salt-rimmed Margarita, they share
their fantastical visions of the boss's fate.
▷ 2 OZ. TEQUILA
▷ 1 OZ. COINTREAU OR OTHER TRIPLE SEC
▷ ¾ OZ. FRESH LIME JUICE
▷ LIME WHEEL FOR GARNISH
▷ LIME WEDGE FOR RIMMING THE GLASS
▷ COARSE SALT FOR RIMMING THE GLASS
Run the lime wedge around the edge of
the glass to wet it. Dip immediately into a
platter of salt. Set the glass aside.
Mix the tequila, triple sec and fresh lime
juice in a cocktail shaker with ice. Strain
into the glass (ice optional). Garnish.
Cosmopolitan
As seen in " Sex and the City " (1998-2004).
Carrie Bradshaw and her friends Miranda,
Samantha and Charlotte shared secrets,
hopes, dreams, shopping tips and a signature
drink. These four very different women made a
hit out of the TV show and revived the Cosmo.
▷ 1½ OZ. CITRUS VODKA
▷ ½ OZ. TRIPLE SEC
▷ ½ OZ. FRESH LIME JUICE
▷ 1 OZ. CRANBERRY JUICE
▷ LIME WEDGE FOR GARNISH
Add the vodka,
triple sec, lime
juice and cranberry
juice to a shaker with
ice and shake until wellchilled.
Strain into a chilled
cocktail glass. Garnish.
Spicy Grapefruit
Margarita
As seen in " Pretty Smart, " (2021).
Serves 2. " It's not the shed that matters.
It's the tools inside it, " says Grant in the
2021 Netflix sitcom. As Chelsea interprets
the metaphor: friends are the tools, more
important than " the socially constructed
expectations of success. " Specialty
cocktails, including a Spicy Grapefruit
Margarita, rotate on the menu board at
the Franklin, the friends' hangout.
▷ 2 OZ, FRESH LIME JUICE (ABOUT 2
LARGE LIMES)
▷ 2 TEASPOONS AGAVE NECTAR
▷ 2 THINLY SLICED JALAPEÑO ROUNDS
▷ 4 OZ. GRAPEFRUIT JUICE (ABOUT 1
LARGE GRAPEFRUIT)
▷ 3 OZ. ESPOLÒN TEQUILA - BLANCO
OR REPOSADO
▷ LIME WEDGES
▷ SMALL GRAPEFRUIT WEDGES AND/
OR MORE JALAPEÑO ROUNDS FOR
GARNISH, OPTIONAL
Chili-salt
▷ 6 PARTS KOSHER SALT
▷ 2 PARTS ANCHO CHILI POWDER OR
REGULAR CHILI POWDER
To prepare your glasses, mix the salt
and chili powder on a small plate. Run
a lime wedge around the top edge of
your glasses then roll the edges in the
spice blend. Add ice to the glasses.
Add lime juice, simple syrup and
jalapeño slices to a cocktail shaker.
Muddle the jalapeño. Add grapefruit
juice, tequila and ice to the shaker and
shake well. Strain the mixture into the
prepared glasses. Garnish.
