Toys and gizmos and software-oh my!
Welcome to November, the time of my favorite holiday of the year-Thanksgiving! I'm genuinely thankful for you, our readers, as well as for the companies whose products we get to show off in every issue. I feel grateful and
blessed (and even a bit spoiled) that my job allows me to explore fun new
toys, gizmos and software, month after month. Speaking of which, November
is also the time for our annual studio upgrade issue. This year, we reached out
to our editorial staff to find out some of their favorite upgrades; you can read
about it on Page 18.
Our new toys this month-speakers, interfaces, headphones, mixers, and
converters, come by way of ADAM Audio, Dynaudio, Arturia, Audeze, Tascam, and RME. In the gizmos department we have power amps, hard drives,
docks, cables, room correction tools, and even a Bluetooth receiver; companies on deck include Amphion, Glyph, OWC, Hosa, IK Multimedia, and Kali
Audio. For software, we have upgrade offerings from PreSonus and Steinberg.
On the DIY tip, Bill Stunt turns mic builder as he constructs and tests the T-25
kit from MicParts.com, before melting even more solder on the joys and satisfaction of mic modding (see Page 48).
For Inside the Studio, Mark Hornsby shares how he helped create a commercial profile collection for the Kemper Profiler Amp line, based on guitarist Carl
Verheyen's extensive selection of rare and unusual amps. For Inside the Box,
Joe Albano considers when it's time to upgrade your DAW, and in this month's
Fade Out, Aaron Trumm asks the question, Do You Need That Upgrade?
I'm really excited about our interview this month. Last year in our November
issue, we featured a look inside Abbey Road Studios, the Fab Four's hallowed
home. Now, one year later, we return to a Beatles theme of sorts as we explore
the new John Lennon collection GIMME SOME TRUTH. THE ULTIMATE MIXES.
This collection contains 36 newly remixed, or better yet re-imagined (see what
I did there?) John Lennon tracks, all crafted from fresh high-resolution multitrack transfers of his catalog. We speak candidly with compilation producer
Simon Hilton, assistant engineer Sam Gannon, and mix engineer Paul Hicks. Mr.
Hicks did the final analog mixes of the project at Henson Recording Studios in
Hollywood. Further music trivia: in addition to being the former home studio of
Charlie Chaplin and Herb Alpert/Jerry Moss' A&M Records, Henson (as A&M
Studios) was where John Lennon recorded much of the Rock 'n' Roll album with
Phil Spector in 1973. Gimme Some Truth also includes a Blu-Ray audio disc with
High Definition 24/96 Stereo, Immersive 5.1 Surround Sound, and Dolby Atmos
mixes as well, along with other delights-check it out on Page 26.
