NABP
Encourages Members to
Enroll in ASHP Well-Being
Ambassador Program
NABP is aware that the pharmacy workforce
is experiencing alarming rates of occupational
burnout that have been exacerbated by the
coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19)
pandemic. At this crucial turning point for
health care in the United States, the American
Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP)
has launched a Well-Being Ambassador (WBA)
program: a virtual learning opportunity with
access to implementation coaches and a
community of well-being ambassadors aimed
to empower local action, mitigate occupational
burnout, and create cultures of well-being in
their health care organizations. Learn more
about the WBA program at https://wellbeing

FDA Issues Draft Guidance on
Dietary Supplements
Food and Drug Administration (FDA)
announced the availability of a draft guidance
that aims to increase the amount of safety
information the agency has about the dietary
supplement marketplace by providing the
industry an opportunity to submit late new
dietary ingredient (NDI) notifications. The
agency intends to exercise enforcement
discretion, for a limited time and in limited
circumstances, to encourage manufacturers
and distributors to correct any past failures to
submit a required NDI notification.
NABP's January 2021 Rogue Rx Activity
Report focused on the risk of tainted dietary
supplements to consumers. The report,
titled Risky Dietary Supplements: How
Pharmacists Can Help Protect Patients, explores
adulterated dietary supplements that enter
the marketplace and how pharmacists are
well positioned to provide consumers with
information regarding the risks associated
with these supplements. The FDA draft
guidance on dietary supplements can be found at

700,000+
Drugs Collected During
Spring DEA Take Back Event
More than 720,000 pounds of unused
medications were properly disposed of during
Drug Enforcement Administration's (DEA's)
22nd
National Prescription Drug Take Back
Day. On April 30, 2022, DEA and its law
enforcement partners set up more than
5,100 temporary collection sites nationwide,
according to a DEA press release. The next
DEA Take Back Day is scheduled for October
29, 2022.
In addition to disposal opportunities
provided by DEA Take Back Days, many
locations offer medication disposal kiosks
year-round. More than 9,000 locations can
be found by using NABP's Drug Disposal
Locator Tool, available on the consumer
website, https://safe.pharmacy/buy-safely/.
PTCB Launches New
Regulatory Certificate
The Pharmacy Technician Certification
Board (PTCB) has created a new Regulatory
Compliance Certificate to provide technicians
with the opportunity to demonstrate their
knowledge and proficiency regarding pharmacy
laws, regulations, legal requirements, and
practice standards to maintain compliance and
quality assurance in various practice settings.
US Surpassed Record 100,000
Overdose Deaths in 2021
More than 100,000 Americans died of drug
overdoses in 2021, up 15% from the previous
year, according to an estimate released by the
National Center for Health Statistics. The
tally of 107,622 reflects challenges exacerbated
by the COVID-19 pandemic: loss of access
to treatment, social isolation, and a more
potent drug supply. It was reported that more
than 80,000 Americans died using opioids,
including prescription pain pills and fentanyl, a
drug 100 times as powerful as morphine. More
information on drug overdose data can be
found at www.cdc.gov/nchs/nvss/vsrr/drugoverdose-data.htm.
New
Prediabetes and Diabetes
Screening Guidelines Lead to Better
Detection Rates
The 2021 US Preventive Services Task Force
(USPSTF) guidelines and 2022 American
Diabetes Association (ADA) recommendations
to lower the starting age for diabetes screening
to 35 years have had a positive effect on
detection rates for prediabetes and undiagnosed
diabetes. The USPSTF recommendations are
based on age and body mass index, which
increased the eligible population from 36.3%
of Americans in 2015 to 43.0% in 2021.
The ADA considers a broader range of risk
factors, so 82.9% of Americans were eligible
to screen under the 2022 recommendations,
compared to 76.7% under the 2003 guidance.
Pharmacists play a vital role in helping to
manage diabetes by conducting risk assessment
testing, providing education to newly
diagnosed patients, serving as a referral source,
making sure patients have testing supplies,
and ensuring that medication regimens are
accurate. More analysis on prediabetes and
diabetes screening eligibility and detection can
be found at https://jamanetwork.com/journals/
jama/article-abstract/2792263.
