Carmelo Lo Faro appointed president
of Solvay's materials segment
Solvay announced that
Carmelo Lo Faro, previously
president of Solvay's
composite materials business
unit, is promoted to a new
role as president of Solvay's
materials segment, effective
immediately.
The materials segment includes both the specialty polymers and
composite materials businesses, and has been identified as the
primary segment for growth and investment as part of Solvay's
G.R.O.W. strategy launched in 2019. In his new role, he will
have commercial and operational oversight on both businesses.

United Airlines announced a commercial
agreement with Boom Supersonic
Under the terms of the agreement,
United will purchase
15 of Boom's " Overture " airliners,
once Overture meets
United's deman-ding safety, operating
and sustainability requirements,
with an option for
an additional 35 aircraft. Capable
of flying at speeds of Mach 1.7 -
twice the speed of today's fastest airliners - Overture can connect
more than 500 destinations in nearly half the time.

New PHOEBUS contract paves the way for development
of future lightweight composite rocket stages
The European Space Agency
(ESA) and ArianeGroup have
signed a new technological development
contract in the field
of carbon composites.
The PHOEBUS
(Prototype
of a Highly OptimizEd Black
UpperStage) program will increase
the maturity of the
technologies needed to lower both the manufacturing cost and

the weight of the Ariane 6 upper stage. The goal is thus to improve its
performance (in particular, an increased payload capacity of about
two metric tons to geostationary transfer orbit), and to validate a new
stage architecture.

Hexion partners with Rassini for composite leaf
spring application in new Ford F-150 Model
Rassini has developed and manufactures
the hybrid rear suspension,
which consists of a parabolic
main steel leaf supported by a composite
helper, at its Piedras Negras
(Coahuila Mexico) location. With
this hybrid suspension, the same
stiffness and durability as a conventional
multi-steel leaf spring pack is
achieved, while realizing a significant weight reduction of 16 kilograms.
In addition to the positive impact this has on the vehicle's overall carbon
footprint and payload increase, the lighter weight component leaves provide
a smoother engagement, less friction and noise.

Sabic and Local Motors conduct feasibility study of recycling scrap
thermoplastic parts and shavings from 3D printing process
study explored more sustainable
The
alternatives to landfilling large, printed
parts in anticipation of wider adoption of
LFAM. It included analyzing the printability
and mechanical properties of Sabic's LNP™
Thermocomp™ AM reinforced compound, used
by Local Motors, after being printed, reclaimed,
ground and reprocessed into pellet form. The study determined that
material from post-production parts and scrap can potentially be reused
in LFAM or other processes, such as injection molding or extrusion, at
