LOOK BOOK
/ / / Fashion and art used to be
the perfect finishing touches for hospitality interiors. Now, they’re more likely to be the starting points for design. Part of the reason may be that guests live in a more culturally plugged-in world. The latest runway collections pop up on their home pages every morning. Their morning commute takes them past a blur of walls covered with spectacular graffiti art. And their iPod playlists shuffle for hours without repeating a single song. So, today’s travelers expect their hotel experiences to have a lot of artstyle in their lifestyle. Wing Lamp, La Maison Tacking a painting Champs Élysées on the wall or putting a sculpture front-and-center in the lobby clearly isn’t what this is all about. As the hotels, restaurants, clubs and spa in this issue show, there’s as much science as art to integrating style statements into holistic interiors. While few designers will be working public monuments into guest rooms as Tatzu Nishi did for Singapore’s pop-up Merlion Hotel (p. 6), they have to weigh the same concerns: What fabrics and furniture make gallery-like public spaces seem more private; how and where to focus light to enhance artworks and how to invite guests to interact with the art and talk about it—and, hopefully, the venue it’s in. One of the most exciting aspects of this new cultural movement is that it’s accessible to designers who don’t have billionaire, art-collecting clients. Most of the inspirational hotels covered in this month’s Special Report on show-off style (p. 16) got hot-list effects with real-world budgets and out-of-this-world creativity. Charlotte Newey, owner of Artist Residence hotel in Cornwall, England (p. 28) reached out to the local creative types to elevate her room designs to works of art without exceeding her “very tight” financials. Parolio & Euphoria Lab leveraged its network of photographers and graphic artists and the painting skills of its founder, Parolio, to create the dramatic, colordrenched museum/nightclub, Club Musée in Madrid (p. 34). This edition takes a behindthe-scenes tour of how all the elements come together to make hospitality projects provocative and memorable.
