International First-Generation Programming International campuses seek out firstgeneration students as eagerly and as early as their U.S. counterparts do, and they offer similar programming, since they also recognize the benefit of reaching out to students while they are still in high school. The University of the Western Cape in Cape Town, South Africa, has established a mentoring program, called Brawam Siswam, in which 400 university students – a mix of second-year, thirdyear, and post-graduate students – divide themselves among five high schools in the area of Cape Town and work there as mentors. They attend high school with the prospective first-generation students for a two-hour session once a week, helping them improve their life skills and get a better sense of what college is like. After the students come to campus, they are incorporated into a program where the mentoring relationship can begin again. New first-generation students are paired with first-generation upperclassmen in academic and social settings so that the incoming students feel an immediate sense of belonging. disadvantaged families – there is no disagreement about the positive impact that programs like TRIO have on firstgeneration students. Not only are high school students who receive help from this programming more likely to enroll in four-year institutions but they are also more likely to graduate.
