Tout Your Success
Ever wonder how farreaching the benefits of your summer conferences are? Well, wonder no more, because the Association of Collegiate Conference and Events DirectorsInternational (ACCED-I) conducted a study designed to demonstrate the “impact of their [conference services’] efforts beyond their campuses.” Go to www.acced-i.org/imis_web/ StaticContent/1/AC10/ eisreport.pdf and you will see that they have used a computable general equilibrium model to demonstrate the impact of conference and event revenues across the country. They surveyed 54 universities and colleges, and according to their results, the average total annual revenue earned by an institution ranged from $84,000 to $10.9 million.

A RESIDENCE HALL BY ANY OTHER NAME
It’s the eternal question. Not “Which came first, the chicken or the egg?” but, “Are they residence halls or dormitories?” Dormitory comes from the word dormir, which means to sleep or to become dormant. The word cubicle (derived from a word that meant “to lie down, to bend oneself”) used to refer to the space in which someone slept in the dormitory. The words residence and hall have grander and more home-like pedigrees than does the word dormitory. A residence obviously refers to a place where one resides, a home; and hall refers to a “place covered by a roof, spacious roofed residence, temple.” Obviously, the Latin roots of the words linger on in their present-day connotations, and housing professionals, when given the choice, prefer residence hall, with its homey connotations, over dormitory, with its connotations of unconsciousness. The term living-learning to specifically denote the educational aspects of residence halls has been used more commonly following ACUHO-I’s 1998 publication of The Residential Nexus, which argued for a strong educational presence in the residence halls. Some housing professionals feel ambivalent about these semantics, especially when it comes to specifically asking those outside the profession to use residence hall instead of dormitory. Several professionals debated the terms when the topic was discussed on ACUHOI’s blog (http://blog.acuho-i.org/2010/03/you-were-asking-residence-halls-vs-dormitories/) and on our Twitter feed. Most professionals, while using the term residence hall themselves, will try to show, but not tell, others how to regard them in the same way, by emphasizing their communities and the learning and nurturing elements of residence halls. If a student calls the structure a “dorm” but talks about the friends he has made and his great RA, what’s in the name doesn’t matter.
