This overdue reissue of Gibson's thorough and exhaustivestudy of the initial
years of the Spanish-Indianconfrontation in one area of Mexico may not
be "archaeology,"but it is first-classand
highly readable history by a first-class
and articulate historian. Tlaxcala was
the only place that Cortés met any determined resistance in his march from
Veracruz to Montezuma'scapital, Tenochtitlán, yet, paradoxically, it supplied the sinews for Cortés final conquest. For this military aid the Tlaxcaltecos were accorded certain special
- but, unhappily, short-lived
privileges
ones- by their Spanish allies (and conquerors). That is ProfessorGibson'stale,
