excavations in 1986). Caesar's siege of
Vercingetorixtook place at this Gallic site
in 52 b.c. Gallo-Romanremains including
houses, a theater and a basilicaare visible.
Occupation continued from the Iron Age
through early Mediaeval times when the
St. ReineBasilicawasbuilt.Other siteswithin
a 22 kilometer radius include: the 17thcentury Chateau de Bussy-Rabutin, the
Mediaevalvillageof Flavigny,the Mediaeval

Douai, St. Julien Road, Flanders (July 1September 15, 1986). The town of Douai
has a long history of settlement ranging
from the 9th centurya.D.to the present. Excavationshave revealed the originalvillage
and its expansion, public baths from the
14th century, and ovens from an 18thcentury brewery. Other features are the
gates of the Mediaevalwalls,the town hall
and belfiy.Withinthe town are the Museum
of Archaeology,Museum of Fine Arts and
the Chartreuse Museum, which sponsors
the excavations.Getting there: Located in

15, 1986). The stratigraphyof this Palaeosite is 11 meters deep with
lithic-Mesolithic
28 distinct levels. Excavatedfinds include

30, 1986). This lower Palaeolithic cave
shows evidence of dwellings,faunal material and pre-Neanderthal human remains.

Excavationof this cave has dated it to the
Lower Palaeolithic, with evidence of an
Acheulean tool industry, faunal material,
pre-Neanderthalhuman remains, and cave

Le Braden, Quimper (All year; excavations in 1986). A rural Iron Age settlement
ca. first century b.c., Le Braden is also an
example of a "gaulois-hamlet" during
Caesar's reign. Excavationshave revealed
a hamlet fortifiedby timber palisades, the
town's main entry, granaries, houses, and
grave sites. Regional Park of Armorique
and important Megalithicmonuments are
located in this part of west Brittany.(A related exhibition"L'Armoriqueet Le Celtes,"
will be shown at l'Abbayede Daoulas, 20
kilometerssouth of Breston the expressway
to Quimper, from June to October, 1986.)

Mâlain-Mediolanum, Côte d'Or (JulySeptember, excavations July 1-31, 1986).
A òallo-Roman town of pre-Roman origin
in eastern France, Mâlain has been excavated since 1968. Well-preserved cellars
and two hypocaustsare among the visible
ruins.The sitewas destroyed in the late 3rd
century a.D. and was never reoccupied.
