Whether the proposals are solicited from work statements or are unsolicited, they should include the following information: • Precisely what is to be done, by whom, under whose personal supervision; • Estimate of man-hours, materials, instruments and apparatus required, and costs for each; • Information regarding the investigator’s special expertise, experience, and/or ability that especially qualifies the individual for the proposed research; and • Identify the contribution, if any, from the research organization’s resources for conducting the project. A summary of recently completed research projects and instructions for obtaining results from those projects are provided as a regular feature of ASHRAE Insights and the “Research” page of the ASHRAE website. ASHRAE members, as a member benefit, have free online access to the final reports of the more than 800 research projects ASHRAE has sponsored since its formation from American Society of Refrigeration Engineers (ASRE) and American Society of Heating and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHAE) in 1958. Grants-in-Aid ASHRAE grants-in-aid (GIA) provide $10,000 to each selected graduate student to conduct research in fields of interest to ASHRAE. In 2011 – 2012, 23 graduate student grants-in-aid were awarded. These went to: Gregory Arcangeli of University of Texas Austin, John Bustamante of Georgia Institute of Technology, Stephen Caskey of Purdue University, Massimo Cimmino of Ecole Polytechnique De Montreal, Christopher Cirone of University of Illinois, James Cullin of Oklahoma State University, Chantz Denowh of Montana State University, Ranojoy Dutta of Arizona State University, Harish Ganapathy of University Maryland, Mingang Jin of Purdue University, Deepak Kalikadal of University of Cincinnati, Konstantinos Kapsis of Concordia University, Donghun Kim of Purdue University, Adrienne Little of Georgia Institute of Technology, Zhinjin Liu of University of California Davis, Jeffrey Milkie of Georgia Institute of Technology, James Montgomery of University of British Columbia, Elena Nirlo of University of Texas Austin, Adams Rackes of Drexel University, Thomas Robbins of Georgia Institute of Technology, Hanfei Tuo

The highest-rated recipients, Adrienne Little of Georgia Institute of Technology and Jeffrey Milkie of Georgia Institute of Technology, hold the added distinction of being named the Life Members’ Club GIA recipients, and their grants are funded by financial contributions from club members. The latest grants brought the total to $3,536,050 awarded to 605 students during the 46 years the program has been in effect. Recipients have represented over 100 different colleges and universities. In order to be eligible for an award, the applicant must be a full-time graduate student who is either currently working on, or proposing to work on, a research project that has relevance to ASHRAE. The student must also have a faculty advisor who will supervise the research. Applicants from all ASHRAE regions worldwide are eligible. Graduate student grants-in-aid applications can be downloaded from the “Research” page of the ASHRAE website under the “Research” page or “Student Zone” page (www. ashrae.org/membership--conferences/student-zone). Faculty advisors send completed applications and student transcripts to the Manager of Research & Technical Services, ASHRAE, 1791 Tullie Circle, NE, Atlanta, GA 30329 by no later than December 15 of each year. Research Expenditures The Board of Directors has approved $2,767,000 for research projects and grants-in-aid payments for fiscal year 2012 – 2013, but a large portion of this amount has already been committed to the approximately 60 active projects already under way. Competing for new project funds are 12 tentative research projects and many other project topics in various stages of development. Active projects are summarized in this report. The summaries include: the title of the project, the start date, the end date or projected (P) end date, the names of the contractor and principal investigator, the sponsoring technical committee monitoring the research, earmarked co-funding, and a brief description of the project.
