omplete shifts in geopolitical and economic agendas are forcing the
North American transportation industry to drastically accelerate the
roadmap to cleaner propulsion. Consequently, government, industry
and academia must rethink the equation that balances near-term corporate profits, energy infrastructure, national productivity and technology
leadership against the need to limit the consumption of natural resources.
The journey will be challenging. Clean propulsion solutions are still
being defined and mass volume necessities and infrastructure are still
under development. The momentum is clear, but the answers are not.
The good news is that innovation and development are rapid. They do,
however, create a complexity whereby significant collaboration and
investments are required to deliver social benefits and support economic
stability simultaneously.
For the near-term, the transportation industry will continue to rely
upon internal combustion technologies and fossil fuels to buoy their base

operations. The tolerance for a modest, evolutionary journey to net-zero
has lost its luster in policy and in the capital markets. There is pressure
squeezing the very core of what has historically been an anchor of every
developed economy. The solution: Integrate a new systems-based view
of transportation that not only focuses on technology, but also maps
solutions from policy to production.
Ricardo is uniquely positioned to face this challenge head-on. For
more than a century, the organization has contributed to the development of novel propulsion systems, and the company's commitment to
transformation has not stopped with technology. Around the globe,
Ricardo is also engaged with business and governmental agencies to
assess the impact of environment and climate change policies, delivering pragmatic blueprints to enhance operational, environmental and
technological advantages that move clients to the forefront of their
competitive set.

Ricardo at the forefront of solving issues created
by increased connectivity and software in vehicles

O

ne of the largest changes and
challenges the industry will face
throughout the next decade is the
demand for software defined functions and
experiences by its customers, and subsequent
impact on the architecture of future vehicles.
With increased connectivity and projections of vehicles running over 150 ECUs and
nearly 300 million lines of software code
by 2030, the embedded ECU and software
defined architectures are setting the stage for
a heightened development and integration
challenge. Moreover, as software defined
functions and connectivity services drive not
only consumer experiences, but the way the
vehicle operates and moves, safety, security
and reliability concerns are astronomical.
Ricardo's approach to the design and optimization of connected and software defined
architectures emphasizes safety, security
and efficiency across the development,
deployment and operation of all vehicle
systems.

High-level considerations include:
1. Delivering certifiable, reusable and updatable baseline architecture for embedded system
development that allows automakers to focus on differentiated application deployment
versus low-level embedded system development and integration tasks.

2. Optimizing the way vehicle data is used and collected. Ricardo bring data processing closer
to the edge and delivers a mechanism for gathering higher frequency, higher fidelity data
while addressing varying connectivity issues.
3. Coupling Ricardo's legacy of powertrain development, vehicle dynamics simulation and
analysis expertise with data science, AI and machine learning techniques to provide context
to data collected. Ricardo solutions, integrated with the organization's ecosystem of partners
across the in-vehicle and IoT architecture, optimize designs, extend external component and
overall use, reduce warranty bills and address increasingly strict
emissions regulations.
4. Supplying comprehensive design, development and system integration expertise across
vehicle systems for transportation of tomorrow - from traditional and advanced propulsion
methodologies and power electronics to software defined and connected architectures.
With the industry-wide drive to deploy cleaner, more efficient mobility solutions, and the policy
pushes to keep us moving, the roadmap for accelerated development is forming with Ricardo
at the forefront of innovation. As a partner and extension to our customers, Ricardo delivers
creative engineering resolutions to help tackle the most complex design, development and
integration challenges.
