So when we came across this concept that blends traditional Moroccan elements and colors with a touch of modernity, we felt like a designer genie had granted us our wish. IDFS, Morocco's first duty-free retailer, enlisted New York-based CBX to transform 9,967 sq. ft. of Casablanca's Mohammed V International Airport shopping space into a duty-free dream. Led by Joseph Bona, CBX designer and president of branded environments, the team worked to create a store design that would strengthen the IDFS brand and give its high-end retail customers a memorable shopping experience. The total space accounts for three separate stores, which are each located along the main concourse of the airport. Each shop has been designed to reference the layout of a classic riad, a traditional Moroccan residential design that is long and narrow, and features a courtyard or interior garden. Among one of Bona's (and our) favorite aspects of the design is its signature element-the royal arch derived from the riad-which can be found at the entrance of the store and is repeated throughout to create a rhythm that also functions as an AUGUST 2014 DESIGNRETAILONLINE.COM instantly recognizable element for the IDFS brand. As a customer moves through the open plan of the space, the vertical breaks of the design are delineated into sections that prominently highlight each of the merchandise categories, widely ranging from confectionary to perfumery products, to meet all of the modern luxury shopper's needs. Adding further to the majestic appeal, the shops include internally lit tower fixtures, each with clearly marked brand logos that include favorite high-end designers. The innovative and flexible kit-of-parts solution that CBX created for the space allows for the components of the design to be quickly and easily configured, which is an ideal solution for IDFS as it expands and remodels its diverse portfolio of 10 duty-free stores across Morocco. Finding inspiration in the country's natural beauty, as well as its rich traditional architecture, the design team was able to bring home the "luxe and harmony" that Bona describes as the ultimate duty-free shopping environment. "The stores are understated, refined and timeless," he says.
