Utility installation in urban environments is often
challenged by needing a lot of power, but in a
compact footprint. This presentation includes an
overview and case studies on new HDD technology
that offers a solution a combination of compact
directional drills and dedicated, off-board mixing systems. The technology provides superior
productivity and performance on larger utility
jobs, eliminating dependence on large drills, and
optimizes downhole horsepower under current Tier
4 compliance regulations.

World-Record Direct Pipe Installation in
South Texas
Speakers: Maureen Carlin, Strategic Marketing

This presentation will highlight the 42" pipeline
shore approach project in Cameron County that
established the new world record for length of the
Direct Pipe Method, with total installation of 5,000'.
Details include equipment selection, labor requirements, safety considerations, design and engineering, marine support logistics and geology. Also,
challenges overcome were offshore site logistics,
difficult ocean current conditions and, most notably,
dangers associated with Hurricane Harvey's landfall
very near the project location.

Reducing Risk of Cross Bores

Cross bores can have dangerous consequences for
utility crews and the surrounding neighborhood.
Through proper upfront planning and preventive
measures taken during an installation, cross bores
can be avoided. Learn the steps every HDD crew
should follow, tools that can assist with bore planning, best practices for potholing, more reliable ways
to locate sewer lines and how to calibrate the drill
head transmitter with the locator.

Ethics for Engineers

The Code of Ethics for Engineers will be presented,
as well as case studies related to ethics for engineers
in the public and private sectors. Attending this session will satisfy the engineering ethics requirement
for annual license renewal.
Track I-E = SEWER/WATER EMERGING TECHNOLOGIES

Presentations on several emerging technologies,
such as:
PbXtractor: Trenchless Lead Service Line Removal
A new trenchless method for lead service line
replacement, RePipe's PbXtractor is a unique mini
excavator and skid steer attachment that pulls out

the entire lead service line as it pulls in a new copper
or PE service line. PbXtractor can also be used to
split galvanized steel pipes. It's trenchless, so it is less
disruptive to property and landscaping, and brings
efficiency and cost savings to the process.

HDD EMERGING TECHNOLOGIES

Presentations to date include:
Jet Pump Technology: Ideal Long-Distance HDD,
Jacking in Highly Permeable Soils
Based on a Venturi system, Jet Pump technology
can be used to accelerate fluids inside a pipeline.
The efficiency is so high that drilling distances of up
to 4,000' can be accomplished with only one highpressure pump, versus standard pipe jacking that requires multiple centrifugal pumps to overcome such
a distance. First tested by Herrenknecht to extend
the application range of HDD in soil formations with
higher permeability, Jet Pump provide it lowered the
risk of frac-outs and eliminated the need for costly
mud engineering.
Drill Seal and HDD Defense: Game Changer in IR
Prevention, Remediation
With growing regulations and environmental concerns, Inadvertent Returns (IR) is making some jobs
undrillable and/or uneconomical. Many areas are
prone to IR due in part to unconsolidated formations,
low overburden pressures and natural fractures.
Right Turn Supply partnered with downhole LCM
specialization company Drillchem Drilling Solutions
to engineer a product line specifically aimed at IR
prevention and remediation. Two main, environmentally friendly sealant products DrillSeal HDD
and HDD Defense are a game changer for operators
drilling any crossing where IR may occur.
