Spring has arrived and with this time of renewal we bring to you the latest news and information
regarding the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of disease through our BioTherapeutics Quarterly
journal. In this issue, we are providing information on the prevention of type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular
disease in Mississippi, progress toward achieving and sustaining neonatal tetanus elimination, disparities
in COVID-19 vaccination between urban and rural counties and many other topics.
Prevent Type 2 Diabetes discusses how 96 million American adults, more than 1 in 3, have prediabetes.
More than 8 in 10 adults with prediabetes don't know they have it. The lifestyle change program that is
part of the CDC-led National Diabetes Prevention Program is proven to help prevent or delay type 2
diabetes. Turn to page 9 to learn tips on talking to your patients about lifestyle change
Preventing Chronic Disease: Cardiovascular Disease Mortality in Mississippi, 2000-2018 beginning
on page 13 states that cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death in Mississippi. This
article explores trends in CVD death rates among adults in Mississippi aged 35 years or older to assess changes from 2000 through
2018. Age-adjusted CVD death rates declined from 2000 through 2018 for all groups studied (men, women, Black, White, Black
women, White Women, Black men, White men), but the magnitude of decline varied among sub-groups. Age-specific analysis
indicated a significant annual increase of 1.7% during 2011-2018 for the group aged 55-64 years.
Maternal and neonatal tetanus (MNT) remains a major cause of neonatal mortality with an 80%-100% case-fatality rate among
insufficiently vaccinated mothers after unhygienic deliveries, especially in low-income countries. Turn to page 22 and read

MMWR: Disparities in COVID-19 Vaccination Coverage Between Urban and Rural Counties - United States, December 14,
2020-January 31, 2022 starting on page 29 discusses higher COVID-19 incidence and mortality rates in rural than in urban areas
are well documented. Rural populations tend to be older and uninsured and are more likely to have underlying medical conditions
and live farther away from facilities that provide tertiary medical care, placing them at higher risk for adverse COVID-19 outcomes.
Addressing barriers to vaccination in rural areas is critical to achieving vaccine equity, reducing disparities, and decreasing
COVID-19-related illness and death in the United States.
MMWR: Notes from the Field, Congenital Varicella Syndrome Case - Illinois, 2021 on page 36 is a reminder that varicella
during pregnancy can cause severe outcomes and underscores the importance of assessing varicella immunity in adults, vaccinating
nonimmune persons, as well as prenatal assessment and postpartum vaccination of susceptible women against varicella.
