& STATISTICS REPORT
2018 Second Quarter Report
Key Take-Aways
y Intermodal gains slowed slightly to 6.2% after rising 7.2%
in Q1. A strong economy increased transportation demand
and tight trucking conditions continue to push domestic
intermodal.
y The Northeast region continued to lead all other areas.
Volume rose 12.4% in Q2.
y Mexico was the only region where intermodal volume did
not increase. Mexican intermodal moves fell 3.9% in Q2.
y Domestic containers maintained their momentum into Q2,
rising 6.1% compared to a 6.2% increase in Q1.
y Demand for trucking was also robust in Q2, but tight
trucking capacity and an ongoing driver shortage are
limiting over-the-road growth.
y Trailer growth accelerated in Q2, rising 18.1% after
increasing 14.5% in Q1. On a monthly basis, gains were
stronger at the start of the quarter than at the end.
y Q2 U.S. GDP growth is expected to rise nearly 4.0%, but
there are still risks - most notably, the threat of a trade war.
y International shipments advanced 4.8% in Q2, the slowest
increase since Q1 of 2017.
