Ten IEEE CIS Senior Members were elevated to the
Fellow grade in 2016. The first five are: Sanghamitra
Bandyopadhyay, Jinde Cao, Fernando Gomide, Yaochu
Jin, and Risto Miikkulainen.
He has coauthored 138 peer reviewed
journal articles many in various IEEE
Transactions, over 240 refereed IEEE
conference articles, co-authored 4 plus
co-edited 2, several book chapters,
received 19 US patents, one patent
defense publication with an h-index of
41 and citations of around 6,780 per
Google Scholar.
He supervised to graduation 23 doctoral and 30 M.S. level students, and his
total funding is in excess of US $15.6
million from various federal agencies
and companies with US $9.89 million
as his shared credit. He was the co-editor
for the IET book series on control
(2010-2013), an Associate Editor of the
IEEE Transactions on Neural Networks
(2005-2009), the IEEE Transactions on
Control Systems Technology (2004-2009),
the UK Transactions of Measurement and
Control (2010-2015), and serving as the
Editor-in-Chief for Discrete Dynamics in
Nature and Society, and on many editorial
boards. He served as the IEEE CSS
Technical Committee Chair on Intelligent Control and a Vice Chair of IEEE
CIS Technical Committee on Adaptive
Dynamic Programming and Reinforcement Learning. He received many
awards including the 2000 NSF Career
Award, 2001 Caterpillar Excellence
Award, 2007 Boeing Pride Achievement
Award, and several research excellence
awards. He is a Fellow of the Institute of
Measurement and Control, UK and the
Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), UK.
Yuhui Shi

Yuhui Shi received the Bachelor
degree, Master degree, and Ph.D. degree
from Hunan University, China, in 1984,

Chongqing University, China, in 1989,
and Southeast University, China, in
1992, respectively. He
has been a Professor
in the Department of
Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU), Suzhou,
China, since January 2008. Before joining XJTLU, he was an applied specialist
at the Electronic Data System, Inc.,
Indiana, USA from October 1998 to
December 2007. From May 1993 to
September 1998, he was a postdoctoral
researcher, visiting fellow, and research
scientist at the Department of Electrical
and Computer Engineering, Concordia
University, Canada, at the Department
of Computer Science, Australian
Defence Force Academy, Australia, at the
Department of Computer Science,
Korea Advanced Institute of Science and
Technology, Korea, and at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Indiana University Purdue
University Indianapolis (IUPUI),
respectively. He was a faculty member at
the Department of Electrical Engineering, Jiangsu University, China, from July
1984 to August 1986, at the Department
of Radio Engineering, Southeast University, from October 1992 to May
1993. He was also an adjunct faculty
member at IUPUI, Jiangsu University,
and Southeast University.
Dr. Shi is the Editor-in-Chief of
the International Journal of Swarm Intelligence Research since its establishment in
2010, and an editorial member of several other journals. He was an Associate Editor of the IEEE Transactions on
Evolutionary Computation from January
2003 to December 2013. He is the
Chair of the IEEE CIS Nanjing Chapter since 2010, and the Chair of the

IEEE ComputatIonal IntEllIgEnCE magazInE | may 2016

IEEE CIS Task Force on Swarm Intelligence since 2002 except 2012. He
has organized several international
conferences since 2003 serving as the
general (co-)chair or the program (co-)
chair, etc. He co-authored a book on
"Swarm Intelligence" together with Dr.
James Kennedy and Dr. Russell Eberhart, and another book on "Computational Intelligence: Concept to
Implementation" together with Dr.
Russell Eberhart. His research interests
include computational intelligence,
especially swar m intelligence, and
its applications.
Thomas Stützle

For contributions to the design and engineering of heuristic optimization algorithms.
Thomas Stützle is a
senior research associate of the Belgian
F.R.S.-FNRS (Na tional Science Foundation) working at
the IRIDIA laboratory of Université
libre de Bruxelles (ULB), Belgium. He
received the Diplom (German equivalent of MSc. degree) in business engineering from the Universität Karlsruhe
(TH), Germany in 1994, and his PhD
and habilitation in computer science
both from the Computer Science
Department of Technische Universität
Darmstadt, Germany, in 1998 and 2004,
respectively.
He is an Associate Editor of Computational Intelligence, Swarm Intelligence,
and Applied Mathematics and Computation, and on the editorial board of eight
other journals including Evolutionary
Computation and Journal of Artificial
Intelligence Research. He is also frequently involved in international conferences
and workshops with program or organizational responsibilities.
He has co-authored two books about
"Stochastic Local Search: Foundations and
Applications" (Morgan Kaufmann) and
"Ant Colony Optimization" (MIT Press),
both being the main references in their
respective areas. His other publications
