is unlikely to expose consumers to excessive radiation.
When numerous such devices scale up,
excessive radiation may occur. Potential mitigations
to this problem include adaptive operating
mode strategy (e.g., switching device working
mode), optimal device deployment strategy (e.g.,
appropriate device deployment), etc.
Lack of advanced radiation risk model or
analysis: Nowadays, the radiation risk is mostly
assessedbymeasuring the radiation intensity after
installation. However, it will cause excessive cost
on the installation and removal if the excessive
radiation is found when installation is completed.
To avoid incurring additional costs, the device
radiationriskmodelingshould beconducted.With
a radiation risk model and mathematical analysis
and simulation, the radiation risk might be predicted
in advance. In addition, the model may be
used to propose the best installation deployment.
CONCLUSION
This article proposes a new global unified
quantitative indicator, namely the nonionizing
radiation safety index (NRSDex). The NRSDex is
inspired by IDex being developed by the IEEE
P2668 working group. It works as an assistive reference
for the public to understand the NIR safety.
TheNRSDexprovidesguidelinestomitigatethe
confusion of global NIR safety standards with
conflicting radiation intensity ceilings. Besides, it
entails and illustrates the specific discrepancies
that cannot be found in current standards for the
candidate devices and provides advice for product
improvement on radiation safety. Furthermore,
the potential harm brought by NIR is
briefed. This investigation also examines and compares
the current NIR safety regulations and limits
adopted by countries that share major global
healthcaremarkets in terms of specific absorption
rate and power density. Three key future directions
related to the NIR safety are also identified.
