Microwave Brightness Temperatures Using Self-regularized Regressive Models."
His advisor is Jasmeet Judge, University of Florida.
Subit Charkrabarti received his B. Tech. in Applied
Electronics and Instrumentation Engineering from Haldia
Institute of Technology in West Bengal, India. He is currently pursuing his PhD degree in Electrical engineering
at the Center for Remote Sensing, University of Florida.
Subit's doctoral research includes developing and applying novel machine learning techniques for spatial scaling
of satellite-based observations for agricultural applications.
7.2. IEEE MIkIo TakagI STudEnT PrIzE
The IEEE Mikio Takagi Student Prize was established to recognize a student who has presented an exceptional paper
at the IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium
(IGARSS). The award consists of a Certificate and an honorarium of $1,000.
The 2015 IEEE Mikio Takagi Student Prize is presented
to Filipe Condessa with the citation: For the paper "Supervised Hyperspectral Image Classification with Rejection."
His advisors are José Bioucas-Dias, Instituto Superior
Técnico, and Jelena Kovacevic, Carnegie Mellon University.
Filipe Condessa received the B.Sc. (2009) and M.Sc.
(2011) degree in Biomedical Engineering from Instituto
Superior Técnico - University of Lisbon, Lisbon, Portugal.
He is currently working toward the Ph.D. degree in electrical and computer engineering at Carnegie Mellon University, USA, and Instituto Superior Técnico - University of
Lisbon, Lisbon, Portugal. His research interests are hyperspectral image classification and biomedical image classification, with the current focus on the design of robust
classification techniques combining rejection and context.
He serves as a reviewer for the IEEE Transactions on Geoscience and Remote Sensing, and IEEE Journal of Selected
Topics in Applied Earth Observations and Remote Sensing.
8. IEEE GRSS EaRly CaREER awaRd
The GRSS Early Career Award is to promote, recognize and
support young scientists and engineers within the Geosci52

ence and Remote Sensing Society that have demonstrated
outstanding ability and promise for significant contributions in the future. Selection factors include quality, significance and impact of contributions, papers published
in archival journals, papers presented at conferences and
symposia, patents, demonstration of leadership, and
advancement of profession. The candidate must be for at
least five years an IEEE GRSS member with an age less than
35 years at the time of nomination and making outstanding contributions in one or more GRSS field(s) of interest.
Previous award winners are ineligible. The Award consists
of a Certificate and an honorarium of $1,500.
The 2015 Early Career Award is presented to Fabio Pacifici with the citation: "In recognition of the outstanding service
for the benefit and advancement of the Geoscience and Remote
Sensing Society."
Fabio Pacifici received his Ph.D. degree in GeoInformation from Tor Vergata University, Rome, Italy, in 2010.
He also received the Laurea Specialistica (M.Sc.; cum
laude) and Laurea (B.Sc.; cum laude) degrees in telecommunication engineering from the same University, in 2006
and 2003, respectively. He is a Principal R&D Scientist at
DigitalGlobe, Inc., where he has been working since 2009.
Between 2005 and 2009, he collaborated as Visiting Scientist with the Department of Aerospace Engineering Sciences, University of Colorado, Boulder. He has more than
10 years of experience in industrial and academic research,
developing remote sensing solutions and leading R&D
teams. His research includes processing of remote sensing
images, data fusion, feature extraction, pattern recognition, and analysis of multi-angular and multi-temporal
data. He has interests in classification and change detection techniques for urban remote sensing applications
using very high spatial resolution optical and/or synthetic
aperture radar imagery, with special emphasis on machine
learning. He has authored (or co-authored) more than
90 scientific publications including journal papers, book
chapters, and peer-reviewed conference proceedings.
Dr. Pacifici is the current Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE
Geoscience and Remote Sensing eNewsletter and serves as
