Moon relaxes at his home in Oregon.

In his spare time, Moon enjoys
spending time with his family and
playing sports, especially soccer
and ice hockey. Each year, he and

students from OSU face off against
Prof. Boris Murmann and students
from Stanford University, California,
for a soccer match in Mt. Shasta,

California. The program, Soccer and
Circuits Collaboration and Education Retreat (SOCCER), is a mix
of fun and networking, learning
about circuits, and soccer. OSU won
its first title in 2018. You can read more
about SOCCER 2018 on page 68 in
this issue.
Moon is also an avid ice hockey
player. After a couple-of-decades-long
hiatus, he started playing again,
which has been a great time, minus
a recent, freak accident. Right before
ISSCC 2019, Moon broke his leg. He
now has a titanium rod in his left
leg and four screws. He is recovering
nicely and plans to get back on the
ice soon.

Finding Freedom in a 60-Year Career
An Auspicious Start to an Astonishing Career

T

There are many astonishing facts
about Prof. Gabor Temes's career of
more than 60 years. The longevity is
perhaps the most obvious, but it also
had an auspicious beginning. He had
just finished his undergraduate education in electrical engineering and
physics in Budapest, Hungary, when
he had to flee after the Hungarian
Revolution of 1956.
Temes's escape landed him in
Canada, where he completed his doctorate in electrical engineering at the
University of Ottawa. After several
years in industry, he was drawn to
an academic career for the creative
freedom and his desire to teach. He
has been at Oregon State University,
Corvallis, since 1990 and served as
head of what is now the School of
