Researchers at Shanghai Jiao Tong
University have chosen to work on
improving the remote control of
underwater robots by adding a semiautomatic layer to handle the difficulties of drift and waves. Xin Song
and colleagues developed a self-tuning PID controller that can operate in
navigation, hover (station-keeping),
or depth-keeping mode so that the
user can deploy an ROV system more
successfully.
The Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute recently took a more
traditional missile-shaped underwater
robot to record distances, keeping their
ROV Tethys running for four days.

With air and sea platforms becoming more affordable and accessible to
researchers, advances in these fields
can be expected proliferate even faster
in the future.

Tethys should eventually stay out for
more than a month, navigating autonomously, for long-term studies of
ocean phenomena, such as algal blooms.
While prices for such systems remain in
six figures, in addition to the costs of the
launch boat, more labs will be able to
afford Tethys-style systems as prices fall.
