Robots Conquer
the World

B

e it big, heavy robots in production, service robots in such
areas as agriculture or logistics,
or vacuum-/window-cleaning
robots for private use: in nearly every
segment of the robotics market, 2014
saw significant growth in both unit
sales and revenues. These results come
from "World Robotics Statistics 2015,"
published by the International Federation of Robotics (IFR). The Fraunhofer
Institute of Manufacturing Engineering
and Automation IPA edited the part on
service robotics.
Industrial robots have boomed in
recent years: 2014 saw a 29% rise in the

sale of industrial robots worldwide,
with the total reaching 229,261 units,
the highest number ever recorded in a
single year. By 2018, global sales of
industrial robots are expected to show
an average year-on-year growth of 15%,
with unit sales doubling to around
400,000 units (Figure 1).
"The main driver behind this growth
is global competition in industrial production. The automation witnessed by
the automotive sector and the electrical/
electronics industry comes out top here,
with a market share of 64%," says Arturo
Baroncelli, the former IFR president.
Five Main Players Share Over
Two-Thirds of the Market
At present, China, Japan, the United
States, South Korea, and Germany are

the five main markets for industrial robots, representing 70% of total sales
volume in 2014. However, the market
situation in China is quite different
from that in the other four countries,
where industry has long profited from
a relatively high degree of automation.
This is highlighted by a comparison of
robot density. The front-runner, South
Korea, deploys 478 industrial robots
per 10,000 employees, followed by
Japan (315 units) and Germany (292
units), while the global average is
around 66 robots. By contrast, China
has a robots' density of 36 units per
10,000 employees.
