reign as she could for us to discover and
sometimes fail on our own."
Of Frances's and William's four children, Linda believes it is her brother,
David, who most inherited her mother's
inventive spirit. "Every time I talk to
him, he has a new idea," she says. One of
her sisters became a math teacher and
is particularly interested in why more
girls don't pursue math. Linda became
an educator, teaching social studies and
Spanish until she retired as a school
principal. "As principal, I was a strong
advocate of girls in math and science."
Some of that is from knowing her
mother's experience as a minority in
her career, but Linda says much is due
to what she saw her students needed. "I
wanted math and science to be taught
in a more hands-on way so that the students would be engaged."
Linda's mission is very much aligned
with the purpose of the new scholarship
honoring her mother's legacy. The money
awarded to the recipient is not allocated for any particular activity and can
be used however the student desires-
encouraging a young female to pursue
her passions and explore her own inventive spirit with a bit of extra support.

Fortune 500 companies such as Ascend
Communication, where she held the
title of senior vice president of customer
service and quality, and Lucent Technology, where she was chief quality officer.
Upon arriving in San Jose, California, in the 1980s, she was introduced to the American Association of
University Women (AAUW), where she
became involved in a variety of social
development activities focused on
women and families in the Bay Area.
This engagement triggered a passion for
development work that has continued
throughout Abbasi's career and is now at
a global scale.
Abbasi, often described as a "visionary leader who executes," combined her
passion for development work and her
broad-based knowledge of technology to
form the eWorldwide Group (eWWG) in
2001. The group is a dynamic consortium of 37 successful companies, universities, and organizations focused on
providing multiple services and solutions in two primary areas: sustainable
development and security.
Her company accomplishes this by
combining practical skills development
with state-of-the-art and localized information and communications technology (ICT) solutions across the arenas of
education, health, and empowerment
through innovation.
Abbasi's success, it seems, is rooted
in something she says: "I've listened to a
lot of talk going around in circles at the

strategic level, from 32,000 feet, when
the need was at the ground level-the
one centimeter level."

Building Partnerships
In September 2000, the United Nations
Millennium Declaration set forward
eight Millennium Development Goals
(MDGs). These MDGs form the blueprint toward meeting the needs of the
world's poorest people. Often referred to
by number, they center around the largest issues facing the world today: poverty
and hunger, universal education, gender
equality, child health, maternal health,
HIV/AIDS, environmental sustainability,
and global partnership. The goals have a
timeline of 2015.
Bringing together the talents and
resources of stakeholders across many
industries, eWWG is able to support
sustainable socio economic development for the marginalized communities
the MDGs aim to protect-the poor,
women, the elderly, and the disabled-
worldwide. Abbasi works with many
United Nations groups including the
United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO); the World Health Organization;
the International Telecommunication
Union (ITU); and the Global Alliance for
ICT and Development, as well as various
international development agencies and
governments in support of the MDGs.
At Devtech, the development division of eW WG, the focus is on how

Salma Abbasi, a British-born Asian who
holds three engineering degrees, made
her journey to the heart of Silicon Valley
in 1980, where she began her career as a
design engineer for AMD. This was the
first of "an eclectic mix" of positions she
has held. Over the course of her career,
she rapidly progressed across design
engineering, manufacturing, quality,
customer service, and business development, holding a variety of senior executive management positions for many
