JS: We attend these trade shows to find
new product, no matter how small a resource is. You never know when you're
going to see the next new, cool, off-thewall item. It could be on the trade show
floor. We want to have an open mind
about it, but the consumer will tell us
if it's a great product. We're always
searching for that one cool, new item.
We want to do everything we can - no
matter how big or how small the supplier is - to bring those types of items
to consumers. We want to be able to
work with licensees because we have a
tremendous amount of respect for the
work, effort, time and money that it
takes to get even one item through the
licensing process.
BH: What's the most important thing
for small-scale licensed product manufacturers to understand about this
business when attempting to compete
with the "big guys".
JS: You can compete. You can bring

new product to the marketplace. We
have a unique position in that we can
find that small company and bring its
product to consumers. For someone
trying to break into the business, they
have to understand that we merchandise
products differently than bricks-andmortar stores. We must have great imagery and copy. We can do a lot of the
"blocking and tackling" during the
process, but you have to ask questions.
You have to be really good communi-

cators and you have to deliver product
on time, which means having a great
supply chain. But if there's a problem,
you have to communicate with us and
be upfront and honest about things.
BH: What are some of the advantages
of having a large-scale online operation
as opposed to the standard bricks-andmortar retail operation?
JS: It's all about scale. When we're
talking about bringing product to the
marketplace, it can be a double-edged
sword. Just because you can buy all the
products and put it in front of your customers doesn't mean you should. Consumers still have to be able to navigate,
shop and understand the product, so
you have to make sure it's organized
properly. We're very thoughtful about
that. We want to make sure that everything in our product assortment has its
place. But the biggest advantages are the
size and scale that you can bring to the
online consumer.
