Mexico

Investor Report

Steady Improvements
Presidential elections and moderate growth may make Mexico less appealing than some regional neighbors, but investors like its improving competitive position and strong fiscal numbers.
rise in consumption and investment are among the reasons many are still optimistic about Mexico’s economy despite slowing growth, ongoing drug violence and the usual uncertainty during an election year. The country may lack the luster of some of the region’s faster growing economies, but economists are upbeat as fixed investments increase on improving competitiveness against Asia. “Mexico has been becoming more competitive little by little,” says André Loes, chief LatAm economist at HSBC. “Unit labor costs in Mexico versus China are almost the same today, versus three times 10 years ago. Now it’s 20% higher than China but given the logistics, it has a competitive advantage.” In 2011, Mexico GDP grew by 4% versus just 1.7% in the US. While that was a fall from the 5.4% seen in 2010 after the economy recovered from the dramatic contraction seen in 2009, Mexico remains an attractive investment destination, say economists. Not only has a depreciating peso and higher labor costs in China helped make Mexico more competitive, but the country’s industrial base has repositioned itself to focus not just on final goods but building components along the value-added chain.  A possible turnaround in the world’s largest economy has also advanced hopes for better GDP growth in Mexico, given that close to 80% of its exports still go to the US. GDP forecasts for 2012 are now being calculated closer to 4% from the low 3% area predicted just a few months ago. Against that backdrop, LatinFinance examines two sides of Mexico’s evolving credit story, glassmaker Vitro’s contentious methods in pushing through its most recent debt restructuring and the rapid consolidation of the country’s bottling sector.
