Central Carolina HEALTH - Fall 2010 - (Page 2)

FROM THE CEO Caring for Women To our community, This is a special issue of Central Carolina HEALTH. In recognition of October as National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, our focus is on breast cancer prevention, and in our cover story, “Journey of Hope,” we will share the incredible story of a young woman’s fight against breast cancer. Breast cancer is a real concern for many women. The National Cancer Institute estimates that 12.7 percent of women will be diagnosed with breast cancer at some point in their lives. With over 30,000 women living in Lee County, that translates to more than 3,800 women in our area—our neighbors, co-workers, family members and friends—who could be affected. You may have heard that Central Carolina Hospital offers breast health services, such as digital mammography, breast MRI and ultrasound, but we also have a surgical team that performs stereotactic needle biopsies, sentinel node biopsies and other advanced diagnostic procedures. Additionally, we have a certified breast health navigator, Gwyn Sandlin, RN, who comforts and supports patients dealing with breast health issues of any kind, cancerous or noncancerous. Gwyn is also a certified MammaCare® instructor who teaches women how to perform a quality breast self-exam. We also recently brought aboard fellowship-trained, board-certified radiologist Travis Henderson, MD. Our breast center has been recognized by the National Quality Measures for Breast Centers™ (NQMBC™) as a Certified Participant to become a Center of Excellence. This recognition means that our breast center has met national quality standards measured by more than 30 separate quality indicators identified by the NQMBC™ program. There are several steps involved in becoming certified as a Breast Center of Excellence, and the process takes several years in order to demonstrate consistency in quality care to the National Consortium of Breast Centers. But we want you to know that this is where we are heading—and this is our commitment to you. Sincerely, Doug Doris, CEO Central Carolina Hospital ONE BUTTON, ONE LIFE The Button Chair exhibit will be at CCH Oct. 11–22. At the exhibit, read stories of women across the state who’ve battled breast cancer. For more information, call the public relations department at (919) 774-2194. 2 | FA L L 2 0 1 0
