T IN 107 Years Strong Wilhelmina Hoorn shows us how it’s done A t 107, Wilhelmina Johanna Hoorn is the epitome of a Healthy 100 Hero. Born in Holland, she immigrated to the United States in 1929, following her husband during World War I, looking for a better life. Once settled, she became a mother to three girls and a full-time housewife. After her spouse passed away in 1949, Wilhelmina supported her family as a master seamstress. She began volunteering more than four decades ago at Florida Hospital Altamonte, knitting baby hats, booties and blankets for The Baby Place as a way to give back. In fact, she is part of a select group of individuals who has given more than 5,000 hours of service to the hospital. Wilhelmina attributes her strong sense of volunteerism with the hospital she calls her own, as well as her involvement in the local German-American Club, with keeping her going day-to-day. Though she no longer knits, Wilhemina collects toys and takes them to the hospital with the help of her family. “The best part of volunteering over the years has been doing things for others,” she says. Wilhelmina isn’t watching life pass her by—she lives each day to its fullest. On a typical day, she walks 55 laps in the pool and around her neighborhood, eats healthy foods, stays active in her church, visits friends and brings food to ill neighbors. “Exercise is very important. After I walk my laps in the pool, I grab my Rolls-Royce—my walker—and walk uphill and downhill in my neighborhood,” says Wilhelmina. “I have a wall full of cards from my 100th birthday from presidents and others, and I am often amazed when I look at them.” One thing is certain—Wilhelmina is teaching her three children, 10 grandchildren and 22 greatgrandchildren important lessons as they embark on their journey toward becoming Healthy 100 Heroes.
