12 Helping Kids P Sons’ golf tournament honors Patricia Snyder’s commitment to children’s health atricia Snyder was a single parent with two young sons—Rob was 8 and Dan was 6—when she began working at Sarasota Memorial Hospital in the mid-1970s. She worked nights and attended classes during the day to become certified as a licensed practical nurse, continuing until she earned her bachelor’s degree and became a registered nurse. Sarasota Memorial didn’t have a pediatric unit then, and Ms. Snyder recognized the dire need to establish a department dedicated to children and the special care they needed. Over the years, as the new Pediatric Unit began to expand, the hospital realized it needed a specialized set of standards to deal with the increasing number of young patients in the growing Sarasota community. Ms. Snyder was asked to assist in the collaboration between Sarasota Memorial’s Pediatrics Unit and the All Children’s Pediatrics Unit, as the two hospitals worked together for an important and common cause—our community’s children. FAMILY FOCUS: “I worked with Pat Snyder for many years and can tell you firsthand that her relentless vision, drive and passion for children in the Sarasota community elevated our level of pediatric care,” says Pam Beitlich, director of Women’s and Children’s Services at Sarasota Memorial Health Care System. “She was a dedicated, committed nurse and our children have excellent care in Sarasota, much of it due to her.” A FUND FOR SARASOTA’S TINIEST PATIENTS After Ms. Snyder’s death from cancer at age 54, her sons established the Patricia Snyder Children’s Fund at Sarasota Memorial Healthcare Foundation, Inc. in 1998. Knowing how much their mother had wanted to continue her mission to improve the lives of children, the men decided to raise funds to assist with those needs, so her legacy and commitment would live on. | T H E GIRAFFE OMNIB ED S EVEN I NCL U D E I N-B ED S CA L ES A ND
