House Call - Fall 2012 - (Page 5)

Healthy U Committed to a Midland Memorial hosts its 11th annual health event Marcy Madrid, director of marketing and media relations for Midland Memorial. I t’s become a favorite fall tradition: Midland Memorial Hospital’s Healthy U event. Now in its 11th year, the FREE health and wellness expo will feature dozens of exhibits and presenters— all focused on providing information and resources that can help everyone in the community lead healthier lives. Something New This year, Healthy U is introducing a brand-new event: the first Dr. Suckarieh Memorial—Walk for Hearts. Although a heart walk has kicked off the day’s activities in the past, this is the debut of a three-mile walk that will raise funds directly for the hospital. All proceeds will go to the endowment fund created in memory of Dr. Suckarieh, a heart surgeon who worked at Midland Memorial from 1989 until his death in 2009. This year, Healthy U also inspired the introduction of a new, related program called the Healthy Neighborhood Project. In March and August, Midland Memorial brought smallerscale health fairs into local neighborhoods— another way to keep communities healthy. Look for more of these in 2013. 1 Something Old About 2,000 people attend every year to make the most of the day. The event will feature about 80 booths with health information from Midland Memorial and other community health partners. Although popular traditions will continue, the theme of this year’s event centers on a celebration of the new patient tower. As always, a variety of free screenings will be available, including eye exams, foot screenings, balance testing and much more. Expert speakers will deliver presentations on a variety of health topics, along with the ever-popular healthy cooking demonstration.
