Soothe Your
SYmptomS
Do you deal with recurring tummy
aches? To minimize abdominal troubles, follow these five simple tips:
w Relax. Stress is a major culprit in
digestive issues.
w Move it. Aim for 30 minutes of
exercise each day.
w stay hydrated. Drinking six to eight
glasses of water each day helps
food move through the system.
w Write it down. If you notice
changes in your digestive habits,
keep a journal of what you are
eating to identify trigger foods.
w Get screened. If you are 50 or
older, or have risk factors for
colon cancer, schedule regular
colon cancer screenings.
Manage Your
Diabetes
Do you have diabetes? If not, you likely know someone who
does. It's all too common in the U.S. But you can prevent diabetes or limit its impact. Your body and mind will be stronger.
Diabetes is complex; it is marked by high sugar levels in
the blood. There are two main types of diabetes: type 1 and
type 2. Your body either doesn't make enough insulin or
can't use its own insulin. Diabetes affects the body's tissues. A recent study says that can include mental function.
Mental decline happens over time, but it's noticed most in
older people with diabetes.
There is good news! You can manage your diabetes to help
prevent-or delay-problems. Your doctor is there to help. See
your doctor at least twice a year. Also, if you have diabetes,
check your blood sugar daily and record any changes. Don't be
shy about asking questions-your health depends on it.

Northside Lifetime of Care
It's not uncommon to walk outside this time of year and have the cold air
"take your breath away." As you age, you may have an even harder time
breathing as the temperature drops. There are steps you can take to prevent the coughing, wheezing or congestion that often come along with the
cold weather.
Warming up for 30 minutes indoors before you head out for a walk can be
helpful. So can wrapping a fleece or wool scarf loosely around your nose and
mouth to keep the air you breathe warm and moist. Of course, if the problem continues, see your doctor to rule out more serious conditions. Also, be
sure to get the flu vaccine to protect your lungs further-and the pneumonia
vaccine, if you need it.
