RECIPE
Small Doses
Bodacious 'Steak' Burger
Enjoying a lean hamburger doesn't have to mean switching to turkey burgers. Just
choose a lean ground beef, like sirloin. And here's another trade secret: If you're
worried your burgers will be too dry without the fat, just add some cottage cheese
to make them bodaciously moist.
It's important that ground beef be cooked to at least medium
doneness. How do you know when it's cooked properly? Use a
meat thermometer. To help prevent food-borne illness, these
ground sirloin burgers should reach an internal temperature of
at least 160 F.
WHAT ARE YOU DOING ABOUT ...
SUN SAFETY?
When you head outdoors for fun, it's easy to get distracted and forget your sunglasses, broad-brimmed
hat or long-sleeved cover-up. But doing so is risky.
THINKING ABOUT IT
The most common form of cancer in the U.S.
is skin cancer. Most cases are nonfatal basal
cell carcinoma or squamous cell carcinoma.
But the Skin Cancer Foundation estimates that
76,690 people were diagnosed with the most
dangerous type, melanoma, in 2013 and that
9,480 died from it.
Ingredients: 1 lb. lean ground beef sirloin (antibiotic-free)
* 14 c. organic low-fat cottage cheese * 1 Tbsp. steak sauce
⁄
* 1 large garlic clove, minced * 14 tsp. salt, or to taste * 14 tsp.
⁄
⁄
ground black pepper, or to taste * 4 whole-wheat hamburger
buns, toasted * 4 large thin slices red onion *1 c. baby arugula
Directions: Preheat grill over medium-high heat. In a large
bowl, gently combine the beef, cottage cheese, steak sauce,
garlic, salt and pepper with your hands. Lightly form the mixture into 4 even patties, about 1⁄3-inch thick. * Cook burgers
for 4 to 5 minutes per side or until cooked at least to medium
doneness. * Remove the burgers to a plate, cover with foil, and
let rest for 5 minutes. Serve on buns with onion and arugula.
Serve condiments on the side, if desired.

WORRIED ABOUT IT
Has anyone in your family had skin cancer? You're at greatest risk-300 percent
greater-if you have had a parent diagnosed
with melanoma.
HOW TO
Your doctor and pharmacist go to great lengths to ensure the drugs they give
IGNORING IT
Have you been ignoring any old or new growths,
or moles, on your body that have changed size
or color? The Skin Cancer Foundation says if
you can spot it, you can stop it. The earlier
skin cancer, especially melanoma, is detected,
the better your chance of surviving it or avoiding disfigurement.
ACTING ON IT

you don't interact. But what happens when you, the patient, take matters into
your own hands with over-the-counter medicines and supplements?
Unless you alert your healthcare providers, it's a risk. Just like prescription
drugs, easily accessible over-the-counter medications or supplements can produce harmful interactions. One bad combination? A prescription blood-thinner
taken with a supplement that causes bleeding.
BE INFORMED
Health fraud scams have been
around for hundreds of years.
The snake oil salesmen of old
have morphed into the deceptive, high-tech marketers of
today. They prey on people's
desires for easy solutions to
difficult health problems. Go to

Rip-offs" guide.
Mychal Amos, PharmD, director of Sky Lakes Pharmacy, points out that
many supplements, such as St. John's wort and ginseng, are not FDA-approved.
"There are many out there that can interact with your prescriptions," he says.
The next time you go to your pharmacy, bring along your prescriptions
and over-the-counter medications you take regularly, and have a pharmacist
review them. He or she can check whether you're at risk for drug interactions.
Look to attend a "brown bag" event, during which a pharmacist can check
your prescriptions and over-the-counter medications for interactions and
expiration dates.
"It's always a good idea to be sure your medications are doing their job,"
Amos says.
He also advises to ask plenty of questions about your medications when you
pick up your prescriptions. But if you're unsure about something later, remember that your pharmacist is just a phone call away.

Check moles and growths regularly for
changes. Do it often enough to make it
a habit, but not so much that it feels like
a chore. Have your doctor take a comprehensive look, and then check yourself
once a month. Take the Fitzpatrick Skin
