Foundation Focus A Celebrating the Spirit of Philanthropy ccording to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, philanthropy is defined as goodwill to fellowmen [and women]; it is an especially active effort to promote human welfare. This “active effort” can be seen in many endeavors at Parrish Medical Center (PMC). The Jess Parrish Medical Foundation (JPMF) began the Spirit of Philanthropy as an extension of the national Spirit of Women initiative sponsored locally by PMC. The Spirit of Philanthropy honors and celebrates the power and passion of women leaders who actively contribute their time, talent or treasure to make our community a better place in which to live, work and raise families. JPMF awarded 11 Brevard County women with Spirit of Philanthropy awards at the second annual Spirit of Philanthropy awards ceremony in May at Parrish Medical Center. • Frankie Eschweiler, Astronaut High School sophomore, and Mitzy Gonzalez, Titusville High School senior, received the Rising Star Award for outstanding young female philanthropist ages 14–20. • Sara Ann Conkling, community volunteer; Cindy Flachmeier, MSW, Community Services Council; and Margaret Kinslow, Brevard Literacy, received the Community Hero Award for outstanding woman of philanthropy at least 21 years old. • Stephanie Haridopolos, M.D., Melbourne, Fla.; Marsha Richardson, MSN, R.N., OCN, Parrish Medical Center; and Janet Rooks, MSW, Parrish Senior Solutions, were honored with the Healthcare Hero Award for a female clinical professional. • Billie Fitzgerald, Marion Sharkey and Rachel Terry were given the Spirit of Philanthropy Lifetime Achievement Award for a woman 55 or older. “Every person who engages in philanthropy in one way or another makes our county stronger,” Lisa Mathews, 2010 Spirit of Philanthropy chairwoman, said at the event. “The Spirit of Philanthropy women’s initiative is giving women throughout Brevard, and especially North Brevard, a networking tool that provides new opportunities for them to improve everyone’s quality of life. We are extremely proud of all the women who were nominated for this meaningful award.” Shown with their Spirit of Philanthropy awards are, front row, from left, Frankie Eschweiler and Mitzy Gonzalez; second row, from left, Janet Rooks, MSW, Stephanie Haridopolos, M.D., and Marsha Richardson, MSN, R.N., OCN; third row, from left, Cindy Flachmeier, MSW, Margaret Kinslow and Sara Ann Conkling; and back row, from left, Rachel Terry, Billie Fitzgerald and Marion Sharkey. National Award Goes to a Local Woman Sara Ann Conkling was chosen for the National Spirit of Women Community Hero in Action Award, which was presented to her in July. The National Spirit of Women Awards recognize and appreciate women throughout the U.S. who dedicate themselves to making their communities, both large and small, better places for everyone. Conkling has worked continuously since childhood to better the lives of people around her. She fights for those who aren’t strong enough to fight for themselves. She operates out of shared humanity and a conviction that there is no “them”; there is only “us.” 54 Vim & Vigor • W IN TER 2 010
