M Up against dedicated researchers and runners, breast cancer doesn’t stand a chance vice President and Chief executive officer, University of virginia medical Center R. Edward Howell marketing Director Robyn Reynolds Creative Director Ken McIntyre any of you know from reading my column that I love to run. With spring just around the corner, I look forward to longer days ahead and more opportunity to prepare for one of my favorite local traditions: the Charlottesville Women’s Four Miler. I’ve participated in this event many times. I’m proud to be among the 3,500plus women (runners and walkers) who come out each Labor Day weekend. Their dedication helps support vital breast cancer research and patient care at UVA. (Last year’s race alone raised $300,000.) My most enjoyable times racing have been running alongside one of my daughters. It’s also exciting to see so many UVA nurses, doctors and other colleagues taking part. Our Gynecologic Oncology Division always makes a strong showing, including Linda Duska, M.D., who has dedicated her career to helping women beat gynecologic cancer. There is also Jana Briedis-Ruiz, a nurse who devotes her free time to helping cancer patients and survivors train for the race. Another participant is cancer researcher and cell biologist Deborah Lannigan, Ph.D. Deborah began running five years ago. Before then, she had never run in her life (not even in gym class, she shares). But, like so many others, she was inspired by the enthusiasm for the cause surrounding the Four Miler. Now she has got her whole family running. Her dedication to helping those who have breast cancer doesn’t stop there; last year’s race coincided with the publishing of a milestone study by Deborah and fellow UVA researchers (including her husband, Ian Macara, who’s one of the many men who root from the sidelines of the Four Miler). What’s so exciting about their research is that they are among the first scientists to successfully replicate the early growth of human breast tissue outside the body. Results from their study and ongoing research at UVA could lead to the development of more effective drugs and even the advancement of personalized medications to treat breast cancer. “Like never before,” Deborah shares, “researchers around the world now have a means of understanding how breast cancer begins and progresses.” It is this groundbreaking work that inspires me—and I hope you—to participate in the 2012 Women’s Four Miler. This will mark the event’s 30th anniversary. Your strides can go a long way in helping researchers make great strides in a different sense. There is a finish line when it comes to beating breast cancer once and for all. With your help, we will one day reach it together.
