“Interest-rate risk and default risk. With the Federal Reserve Bank ending its purchases of Treasuries, agency debt, and mortgagebacked securities, I’m worried that rates may rise, especially on the long end of the curve, causing bond prices to drop. Rising debt

levels and deficit spending are also a concern, especially in the eurozone. I’m concerned that debt

downgrades, currency bets, and bad budgets will cause a widespread financial crisis, pressuring eurozone bond prices. But this may have the perverse effect of increasing demand for U.S. bonds.”

I have no idea whether we will have inflation or deflation, a double dip, or continued slow growth. But we, along with the rest of the world, have debt that needs funding.”

“The most obvious is the impact of rising interest rates on currently held bond market values. Also, I’m concerned about the impact that higher rates will have on the P/Ls of the bond issuers, which in turn may have an impact on the ratings of the bonds. Municipal bonds also concern me. Many states’ financials are hurting badly. I am shortening the duration of bond portfolios for clients. Plus, I am allocating more toward equities and other types of investments that perhaps won’t be as affected by rising interest rates to help offset the impact of volatile bond market values in a rising-rate environment.”
