Bell Telephone Laboratories made a production version of the magnetron at the end of 1940; the Radiation Laboratory was set up on the Massachusetts Institute of Technology campus to utilize the unit in various types of radar. In the 1 October 2011 science section of The New York Times, there was the obituary of Lee Davenport who died at the age of 95. He joined the MIT project in February 1941, and while working towards his doctorate, he oversaw the development and testing of the Signal Corps Radio, SCR-585, with a scanning technique and computer to automatically aim antiaircraft guns at enemy aircraft. It was ﬁrst used at the Anzio beachhead in early 1944, then in Normandy on D-Day, 6 June 1944. When the Germans launched the V1 buzz bombs against London in mid-June 1944, he went to England to see the system in use at the gun belt surrounding southern London. He relates how he found an American crew reading the manual to ﬁnd out how to operate the system while seven or eight buzz bombs passed overhead without a shot being ﬁred. That soon changed, and the control system became very effective in shooting the

weapons down that had made it past the ﬁghter belt on the South coast. When he arrived at MIT, Davenport said he was bewildered by the most complex system one could ever dream of for knocking a plane out of the sky; he went on, “as far as I was concerned, you ought to be able to aim a gun at an airplane without a big computer and shoot it out of the sky. Little did I know.”
