People & Places Home & Hospice Care of Rhode Island Awarded LEED Gold Certiﬁ cation Home & Hospice Care of Rhode Island (Providence, RI) is the fi rst healthcare program in the state to earn LEED Gold Certification for its hospice facility—the recognized standard for measuring building sustainability and verifying that a building project is truly “green.” To date, Rhode Island has 15 LEED certified buildings, and Home & Hospice Care is only the second to achieve gold-level certification. In addition to the LEED certification, the program has signed a four-year contract with a renewable energy provider to obtain 35 percent of its power from renewable sources and has launched a ‘Green Clean’ program that calls for using green cleaning materials throughout the facility. Earlier this fall, the program also welcomed Shan-Wei Ko, RN, MSN, GNP, as vice president for patient care services. In this role, Ko is responsible for ensuring the hospice’s clinical practice demonstrates quality and advanced hospice care delivery. Robert Milch and Jeffrey Stoneberg Receive National Recognition for Medical Excellence in End-of-Life Care Robert Milch, MD, FACS, a staff physician with The Center for Hospice & Palliative Care (Buffalo, NY), and Jeffrey Stoneberg, DO, a clinical medical director with San Diego Hospice and The Institute of Palliative Medicine (San Diego, CA), have received the Hastings Center Cunniff-Dixon Foundation Physician Award. Dr. Milch, who served as the medical director for The Center for Hospice & Palliative Care from 1993-2007, received the established physician award of $50,000 in recognition of his leadership and excellence in palliative care and surgery—and his enduring and exemplary commitment to end-of-life care. Robert Milch Jeffrey Stoneberg Dr. Stoneberg was one of three physicians to receive the early-career physician award of $15,000, in recognition of his outstanding clinical skills as well as his achievements in growing the Scripps Mercy Palliative Care Consultation Service, a local community healthcare system. Staff from Hospice & Palliative Care Charlotte Region Honored for Service Excellence Seven staff from Hospice & Palliative Care Charlotte Region (Charlotte, NC) were recognized by their community at the close of last year. Janet Fortner, MSW, president/CEO, received Leadership Charlotte’s Schley R. Lyons Circle of Excellence Award. Pete Brunnick, CPA, executive vice president and chief fi nancial officer, was selected as the Not-for-Profit CFO of the Year by The Charlotte Business Journal. Patty Brown, RN, BSN, CHPN, clinical education coordinator, received the Sharon O. Dixon Award for Excellence in Clinical Care from The Carolinas Center for Hospice and Endof-Life Care. Emily Kennedy, MSW, was selected as the Mecklenburg County Hospice and Palliative Care Medical Social Worker of the Year by the Organization of Public Health Social Workers. Niki Koesel, RN, ANP-C, ACHPN, nurse practitioner, received the Advanced Practice Certified Hospice and Palliative Nurse of the Year Award. Beth Martin, RN, MSN, CCNS, ACNP, nurse practitioner, received the Lifetime Membership Award by the American Association of Critical Care Nurses. Amy Sloop, RN, CHPN, was voted HPCCR Nurse of the Year by the organization’s staff. 14 NewsLine
