finally rolled around — and so did 5:30. I’m a firm believer in being in the treestand well before first light. I never saw Max move so quickly. After downing hot chocolate and a couple of Pop-Tarts, he put on his one-piece camo suit and we were off. We were in the treestand by 6:30. After settling in and placing our crossbow on the guard rail in front of us we began scanning. Max was watching intently for any sign of deer. As the sun rose we spotted several does walking up the trail that our treestand was near, but no buck. In my pre-season scouting, my son and I had seen at least seven different bucks on a regular basis, so I was confident we would see at least one. Suddenly Max squeezed my knee — our predetermined signal for the sighting of a buck. The buck, a 4-point, had come out of a thicket and appeared 20 yards in front of us. Max got set up and, after I released the safety, he shot. The deer traveled less than 25 yards before going down. We waited a few minutes to be sure he had expired and then climbed out of our stand. Max went first, with me behind him, as he followed the blood trail to his buck. What a happy 7-year-old. After tagging, my son came to help move the deer to another area for gutting, which was, as anyone can imagine, an exciting process for a 7-year-old. I had to point out almost every organ. Of course the next thing to do was load the buck

into my truck to take to show his brother. They were both very excited, especially Noah, because it was his turn next. I was really concerned about duplicating this feat a second time. After some begging, my daughter relented and let me take Noah hunting before school on a Wednesday. Same ritual, hot chocolate, Pop-Tarts and in the tree 30 minutes before the sun even started to rise. The day was a cold one, and we had only a couple of hours. We saw a fox, several does and a nice spike that stopped 20 yards in front of us but really didn’t present an ideal shot. At 8:30 we got down and hurried to the bus stop so I would not get in trouble. We made it, but Noah had to wear his camo to school. That Saturday was a miserable rainy day but Noah still wanted to go, so we did. After three hours we left with no sightings. Out again that afternoon. We did see several deer, and a nice spike presented a good broadside shot, but the bolt was deflected by a small branch. The next Wednesday was bitter cold; the thermometer in my backyard read 18 degrees. I suggested that we skip it, but Noah insisted. After about two hours Noah felt he was getting frostbite, so we left to get hot chocolate. The final day of deer season arrived and we were out again for a morning hunt. We saw a fox, rabbits, turkeys and squirrels, but no
