On the Farm Cattle Farming in South Dakota n the Wyoming and South Dakota border in the Northern Hills District of the Black Hills area sits a quaint farm that spreads over 1600 acres. A family-owned ranch since before the 1900’s, Charles and Sallie, along with their son and daughter, work to maintain the land for cattle and other wildlife. In the 1900’s work was done on horse back. It was only about 15 years ago when they switched over to ATVs and now, just this spring, they hopped over to a Rhino and have never looked back. “We can go almost anywhere with our Yamaha Rhino side by side that we can go with our ATV Yamaha 4-wheeler – and more places than with a pickup. We can go faster than with a horse and carry more supplies into the hard-to-get areas, we’re easier on the environment, and we can even carry out garbage we find along the trails,” says Charles. O By Charlene Bower 48 SIDE X SIDE ACTION MAGAZINE Charles and Sallie’s cows go nuts for this feeder. They supplement their diets with these cow cakes which is concentrated processed food. The impressive results from these nutritional additions to cattle’s diets include enhanced immune response, weight gain, beef quality, and better reproductive performance. Charles and Sallie are responsible for more than their own acreage. They also pay the USFS for grazing permits. This adds 30 to 50 thousand more acres to their chores. These permits were first issued in the early 1900’s for land that was undesirable. The government saw two different benefits to doing this: they wanted more beef brought in for the miners and settlers and with the cows grazing the area it would reduce some of the danger from wildfires. There were very few to no fences at the time and very little maintenance was required. Since then, fences have gone up, making it a closed range. These fences separate each grazing allotment, and then additional fences
