New formulations for

compound that resembles a fine black

Baldor Electric Co. has received $2
million in REACT support to develop a
new type of REE-free traction motor that
relies on a unique motor design, an improved
cooling system, and advanced
materials manufacturing techniques.
QM Power’s $1.2 million project aims at
a 270-hp (201-kW) motor design that
uses iron-based magnetic materials in-
stead of REEs, a new control technique, and advanced manufacturing
methods that could substantially reduce the cost of
the motor.
In time, all these measures will help the auto industry make
do despite the growing use of costly REE permanent magnetic
motors and other high-performance products, but continuing
international efforts must also ensure that REE costs stay stable
and supplies continue to be reliable. If not, progress toward
much larger fleets of cleaner EVs and hybrid vehicles may be
stymied.
