Each year, SAMPE recognizes individuals for their significant contributions to the materials and processes community. In the past 30 years, 134 have been recognized as a SAMPE Fellow. This year, SAMPE is pleased to welcome five new Fellows. Citation: Dr. William Avery is highly regarded for his exceptional contributions to advanced composites use in commercial aircraft design, analysis and manufacturing with respect to critical structural areas of primary structures manufactured with high performance carbon fiber materials. Dr. Avery’s critical work in areas pertaining to impact damage modeling and testing large structures lead up to the incorporation of advanced composites, carbon fiber structural materials into critical 787 aircraft components and systems. His technical presence in the field of structural composites impact damage and testing certification, with respect to large commercial aircraft structural systems, his mentoring of people, and his many contributions to SAMPE are truly exemplary and worthy of recognition. Dr. William B. Avery Dr. Avery’s most important technical contributions are his recognized and significant accomplishments in advancing the Boeing 787 Dreamliner commercial aircraft through critical development stages and into the production phase. The unique structural design of the 787 required a significant technology leap using advanced composites carbon fiber materials and innovative manufacturing processes developed initially in the laboratory and with numerous subscale structures. However, bringing such new technology to the airplane, required extensive largescale testing of key 787 subcomponents such as wing panels, wing spars, and other wing structures to representative load and failure levels. A number of these test series had to be designed, documented with rigid procedures and carried out to demonstrate not only the initial design and manufacturing concepts, but also demonstrate in-process design changes and manufacturing changes that addressed early composite issues that appeared in the development stages of the 787 Program. Wing panel tests were conducted to demonstrate structural performance in critical 787 configurations well beyond previously demonstrated technology limits for these carbon fiber materials and traditional manufacturing processes. Dr. Avery was responsible for these large-scale subcomponent structural tests, and his personal contributions and technical leadership were key in meeting development and production schedule goals for the 787. Dr. Avery was also responsible for defining and carrying out critical 787 wing box testing to establish confidence in the wing box after the discovery of some initial wing box cracking issues during the design and development phase. The resulting “fixes” were a result of his development of specific engineering studies and his creation of the fix-application. The wing structure, built in Japan by Mitsubishi Heavy Industry (MHI), was also a significant contribution attributed to Dr. Avery. In this activity, he developed and supervised the structural test program to certify wing structural conformance to Boeing’s rigid design and manufacturing standards. Dr. Avery was recognized as the “designated” test director and responsible party for assuring full conformance of the testing process. Dr. Avery has had many significant contributions along his long career path in composite materials for aircraft, but his significant and critical contributions to the 787 airplane stand on their own merits. Dr. Avery has exhibited sustained professional growth both within the SAMPE international community as well as within the advanced composites technical industry over the past 25-30 years as a recognized leader within several key technology areas: commercial aircraft design and analysis, composites testing of large structural test articles, participation in development and production design and manufacturing issues relative to commercial aircraft, Program Manager in rotor-dynamic engine analysis techniques project, development of VARTM resin screening procedures and advances in E-beam curing technology. He has sustained his growth through active technology effort and management of several key composites programs involving commercial aircraft transport systems – such as the Boeing 787 Dreamliner, and as can be seen by his career history has continued to reach higher levels of responsibility within Boeing. 38 2013 SAMPE Fellows SAMPE Journal, Volume 49, No. 3, May/June 2013
